Lamicatal dosages

Posted by Mandy on February 27, 2005, at 11:05:34

I take a lot of meds for bipolar I--Wellbutrin SR 150, Lexapro 10mg, Lamicital 150mg am and pm, Remeron 30mg, Klonopin 1mg at night, and Seroquel 300mg at night. In spite of all this, my mood is getting dark. My doctor wants to up the Lamictal but I thought I read somewhere that bipolar pts should not go above 300mg. Does anyone have any input? Should I get off all these antidepressants?

Have you ever tried reducing the seroquel? JN

i am on lamictal 100mg. At one point i had gone to 300mg or 350mg i can't remember which one. At that level i started freaking out with panic attacks right and left. Thought i was losing my mind. Dropped the dosage and have been fine on it since. It was a very unpleasant experience.

Ed,

Thanks for asking. The valium has been pretty good. I remember discussing with you the change over and you had said they were similar and fyi you are correct. I knew they broke down into the same metabolite but I was unsure if the effects would mirror eachother. The one subtle difference I find is that Valium seems to calm and slow a bit more while Librium has the propensity to energize with less mellow. I prefer the Librium and some time by mid-week will be changing back to 10mgx2 Librium per day. Thanks again. John

I have heard of some people needing Lamictal 450mg.

You might want to describe more about your case.

I think it would be helpful to describe the role each drug plays in your treatment. Why was each chosen, and how the dosages were determined.

At first glance, it looks like you are taking a lot of stuff. Maybe the doctor knows what he's doing.

I guess the problem is the meds were added gradually as the docs decided I had bipolar. Initially, it was just lexapro and then other mood stabilizers were added that did not work. When I could not sleep, they added remeron and then seroquel. And to be honest, I do not know how long I have been on the Wellbutrin. The lamictal over the past 15 months has definitely stablized me. But the other drugs were added by different docs and now I just do not know how to get myself down to one or two meds. The doc keeps saying if you have no side effects, don't worry. But so many meds surely cannot be good

Hi Mandy,

If you are stabile on Lamictal than maybe you can cut back on the seroquel. If you want to cut down on meds talk to your Pdoc and begin a reduction of whatever AD you like least. It seems like the safest way. I take Remeron and it really helps my sleep so I might keep that if I were you. Good Luck JN.

Yes, remeron helps with sleep. Fondly, Phillipa
