I can't remember ever reading of anyone here experiencing akathisia when starting on an MAOI. Is this a rare phenomenon on this type of medication? Right now I'm highly anxious and agitated and I'm finding it hard to tolerate meds that I've had no problem with in the past. Might this be another reason to try an MAOI?

I had this along with severe insomnia at 75 mg of Nardil. I just couldn't tolerate it and had to back down to 67.5 mg.

That's interesting that you didn't have the problem at start-up but only on the higher dosage. I wonder if you had taken something to help the akathisia whether it would have passed. It's really a moot point though because you couldn't tolerate the 75 mg. for other reasons. Are you still taking Nardil or have you started decreasing in order to start on Parnate?

I'm still on 60 mg. I see my pdoc in early March. I've tried to go to 45 mg on my own, and the excessive sleeping comes back. I'm thinking I might need a type of stimulant to help me get through tapering, but given my experience at 75 mg, any kind of stim makes me nervous.
Where are you with your med plans?

Hi gg,
I didn't realize that Nardil was that hard to taper off of. Hopefully your doctor will know the best way for you to handle this.I'm still kind of in limbo. I'm on 25 mg. doxepin for anxiety at this point. I need to get some serotonergic assistance though as I'm still very anxious and depressed. The doxepin prevents panic attacks but there's still a lot of underlying anxiety. As I mentioned above, I tried to go back on Effexor which made the agitation much worse. My doctor gave me some Zoloft samples so the next step is to see if I can tolerate that.
Thanks for asking. Keep us posted on what you and your doctor decide to do in March.
