Hi: I've been on Wellbutrin XL for a few months now. I take a very low dose of Elavil at night for longtime sleeping problems and fibromyalgia. Due to a lack of energy and tiredness in the daytime and depression I tried Prozac. It made me a zombie and super tired no matter how much I lowered my Elavil,I gained weight too. So, I stopped Prozac. I then switched to Wellbutrin XL, it gave me incredible energy the first month. I went through the jittery period and even a little skin rash reaction but now thats all subsided. HOWEVER, NOW I'm so tired in the daytime a few hours after taking Wellbutrin XL at breakfast. And, I have a hard time waking up again. I then lowered the dose of Elavil down to 10mg at bedtime again. No help. Now I am trying something different and I'm taking the Wellbutrin XL at night with the Elavil. It puts me right to sleep. I am sleeping like a baby and waking up refreshed. However by late afternoon I'm tired and really exhausted. What to do? Maybe try switching to Wellbutrin SR? Am I one of the people who metabolizes Wellbutrin a little differently? I wish I had the energy that I had when I first started it. I felt it was a miracle, now I'm just tired again.
Thanks for the help!

Hi:
Wellbutrin causes often 'insomnia,' 'Anxiety' and other S.E. due to 'stimulanting' efficacy. However, this does NOT apply in your case. Partly, in my guess, ... your other problem, 'fibromyalgia' or other med. Elavil can make WB metabolization differently? In my suggestion, try to switch a 100 mg. Wellbutrin SR, divided dosage from AM to bedtime, three times a day.

Wellbutrin blocks the metabolism of Elavil, which is why these two meds aren't often co-prescribed. Is the same doctor prescribing the Elavil and Wellbutrin? I think there is a serious contra-indication here. At the very least, you should have an Elavil plasma level done (expensive if you don't have insurance, but worth it if you want to continue on these two meds).

Is elavil considered to be an "upper-downer". Still trying to figure what I was on years ago. Thanks Fondly, Phillipa

Elavil, possibly, but more likely Pamelor (nortriptyline), its active metabolite.

Hi: Yes, my fibro doctor and my primary physician know about the Wellbutrin XL and Elavil(Amitryptaline). In my case the Elavil is such a low dose it's not considered a problem with the Wellbutrin and this is often done with fibro patients. My fibro doc was glad to hear I was on Wellbutrin XL. I was told that the Wellbutrin XL would just increase the effects of the Elavil, thats why I went down from 25mg to 10mg of Elavil at night. I do think I am going to switch to Wellbutrin SR. I've actually had to lower my WellbutrinXL dose from 300mg to 150mg because at 300mg I tend to get a raging attitude especially during pms. And raging is something I NEVER do normally. I have a feeling the SR won't hold on so long in my system, hopefully metabolize quicker. What's disappointing is, I just have absolutely no energy as I did in the beginning of taking Wellbutrin XL. I mean I was up early, motivated, cleaning my house, getting chores done, I felt alert and on the ball. I wish I still felt as I did at the beginning of Wellbutrin XL. I'll enquire about the SR and let you all know how it works when I switch.
Thanks for all of your support! ;)
