Desipramine is going to make me fatter?

Posted by Maxime on February 15, 2005, at 20:28:30

I was given a script for Desipramine today. Now I don't want to take it. The paper I received from the pharmacy notes that weight gain and increased appetite are side effects! I can't gain weight! I know it sounds stupid to worry about that when I am so depressed but I can't.

Sob. I can't handle it anymore! I am not going to take this med. Forget it.

Please take it Maxime. I want to know if it helps you. I may be next to try a drug of this type. What's more important your mind and well-being or your wt.? I know, I think the same things. Fondly, Phillipa

Desipramine i dont think can be combined with Parnate, or any MOAI's

Does your doctor know what he is doing?

I have anorexia. I can't take that medication. I will not lose control.I am a fat ugly bitch who doesn't deserve food. I will NOT give in and start shoveling food into my face.

I have been off the Parnate for over 3 weeks. It stopped working and then I started Nardil which made me sick .... throwing up and passing out.

And you can take a small amount of a TCA with an MAOI even though it is contraindicated. Just like was I able to take the Adderall even though it's contraindicated.

My pdoc has been in psychiatry for over 40 years. He knows what he is doing. The man is brilliant.

Im not anorexic, but i lost MUCH weight on it, to the point of unhealthness.

I am just a normal looking guy, some of matt damon, but with darker hair.

But my personality i dont like, i feel i dont fit in, i never found who i am.

I abused adderall becuase it made me feel better about myself.

I'm not saying love your yourself like madonna, but recreate a new feeling overyourself, and know your unique. LOVE YOURSELF, your superior to all others opionions, your not a fat ugly bitch, your a superstar.

Look in the mirror and practice positions you like your self, despite any image, you can make anything look good. Touch your face, it is masterpiece.

I have problems to, i feel socially isolated, and diffrent, but i fight it with putting on a feeling im unique.

Well, some therapy advice from a kid, not much, but keep it going sandy.

If i were your doctor, i would recommend Ativan, or Xanax for some emotional relief.

Relax, stay alive, i will try to also.

Matt

Of the TCAs, I undersand desipramine to be the least likely to cause weight gain. I am taking it now, with adderall and a tiny amount of Abilify. No weight gain at all, and I usually gained weight on other tricyclics.
So in terms of tricyclics, it should not be too bad...
I can understand that you are sensitive about the weight thing, but I really think it is worth a shot. Personally I like desipramine. If it does not agree with you, you can try other things.

The listed side effects don't happen to everyone, you know. And considering you've had a history of anorexia, you are LESS likely to experience increased appetite (since you are so out of touch with your appetite already) and weight gain (since you wouldn't allow that to happen).

I haven't gained anything on Desipramine. Not one pound. I'm being threatened with hospitalization again, actually, because my weight is so low.

You know, I may be forced to try something like this. But, years ago I was given a TCA that I can't recall the name of. It sent me into a state of Panic so I only took it once. Valium and meprobamate helped me at that time. Does anyone know which tricyclic would be considered an "upper downer" as the pdoc, at that time, referred to it? Thanks Phillipa

Adderall was pulled off the shelves here in Canada and I am going through withdrawal. So no worries there. It didn't cause me to lose any weight. My metabolism is slowed down because of my eating disorder. I eat less than 500 calories a day and I maintain my weight and sometimes I gain.

Matt, for a "kid" you are very wise. I know I need to learn to love myself. I don't even like myself right now. Anorexia is very complicated. It has to do with so many things and least of which is food.

Thank you for your kind words. I will try to hold on to them.

I don't know. For some reason I always thought elavil sounded like an upper downer. As far as wt and eating disorders go, I guess I've developed one as well. Since I can't taste {chocolate the last taste to go} I sit and suck and suck on assorted mini=chocolate at night before dinner. Just to try and taste something! Fondly, Phillipa

Um, what eating disorder do you think you have? Do you restrict your food? Do you purge your food either by vomitting or using laxatives? Do you binge? Do you overexercise?

I'm not sure we are on the same page here ...

Maxime, I know what you mean. I guess I've developed a unique one. I don't restrict my food, or purge. Just eat chocolate at a certain time each evening to try and taste. OCD probably. Fondly, Phillipa
