The Gift and the Curse - orgasms, surgery, etc...

Posted by Michael Bell on February 13, 2005, at 17:43:05

Well, tomorrow morning's my surgery where I'll be going under general anaesthesia. As this is my ninth day off Nardil, hopefully the FDA and other sites are right about the ten-day rule. I'll warn the anaesthesialogist (sp?) just in case anyway, especially about Demerol interactions.

I tapered down from 75 mg/day to 0 mg/day in about 3-4 days, which was probably dumb and not recommended. But the Klonopin smoothed everything out.

All the side effects I was experienceing on Nardil (nothing major) are gone, like the daytime fatigue, bouts of mild dizziness, urinary retention and blurred vision, but one side effect still remains for some reason, and this is why I call Nardil the Gift and the Curse:

I'm talking about anorgasmia, dammit! It's still plagueing me, 9 days after quitting the drug! At anywhere between 15mg/day - 45 mg/day, my libido is increased, the sex is great and the orgasms powerful. But the anti-anxiety effect isn't as good as it could be. At 75 mg/day, Nardil destroys social phobia (especially with a little Klono thrown in) and anhedonia, but... even though the libido is still strong, I've had to kiss orgasms goodbye. I'm talking sex for literally hours. My girlfriend's not complaining, but it is very frustrating to say the least.

Anyway, I'll be restarting the Nardil a few days after surgery. They say the anorgasmia issue usually goes away after a couple months. I hope they're right.

Wish me luck!

Good Luck! What type surgery are you having? I hope you have a speedy recovery. Let us know how you do! Fondly, Phillipa

Thanks for the kind words! It's surgery to remove some polyps from my vocal chords (too much home studio recording). I'll drop a note to let everyone know it went well. Talk to you soon.

Good luck! I'll be thinking about you and look forward to hearing from you after it's all over.

I was wondering if some of the side effects may go away over a certain dose. I've heard with Parnate that the sexual side effects, insomnia, and hypotension go away once you go over 100mg per day or so. I think it has to do with inhibition of the 5HT2 receptor or something. I wonder if there's any similar function with Nardil?

Thoughts anyone?

Brian

Michael: All the very best with your surgery and recovery ( and which I hope is very quick!). I can relate to your frustration of sexual s.e.'s (from SSRI's, not Nardil).
Starting again climbing the dosage ladder to find a therapeutic range without the side effects just has to be exasperating!!
I'm wishing you well for all of it.
Regards,
Jas

Surgery went through without a hitch. The anaesthesiologist know about MAOIs and what is contraindicated with it.

The codeine did lower my blood pressure somewhat, but not dangerously.

Thanks for the good vibes!
