Hey all. I have read that Xanax is suppose to be good for depression but I have thought that benzo's can cause depression so I am a bit confused. Do different benzo's do different things in regard to depression?

Are you in the US? My understanding was that they had wanted to market it for depression too, but research studies didn't find it helpful and so they only marketed it for anxiety. Don't know how this worked out in other countries. So i guess I'm saying that I heard it wasn't helpful for depression.
I don't have a lot of experience w/ Xanax. I myself only took it briefly and I didn't find it to change my depression (but it helped with my panic attacks).
Best,
EE

Yes they do
xanax is a trialobenzodiazpine, so is a few others. which make it unique and have anti-depressant properties.
klonopin is known to release serotonin into the bloodstream.
Just a few examples of how they can act like antidepressants.
They can also make people more depressed though, since they are CNS depressents.

Prozac is the only SSRI so far I've found with acceptable results and combining it with Xanax XR to reduce the stimulation seems to be the best combo I've found to date.

Xanax used to instantly relax me. Now, it just makes me tired. I guess I've grown tolerant to them. Fondly, Phillipa
