How to dispose of meds

Posted by Minnie-Haha on February 2, 2005, at 14:22:05

SadDoggie's post about expired meds made me think of a question. What is the proper way to dispose of meds? I read somewhere that you shouldn't flush them, but take them to a pharmacy for disposal. When I tried this, the pharmacist said to just throw them away. Anybody know the answer to this?

This was actually just in our newspaper: wrap them securely in plastic, still in their bottle, and throw them in the trash. The idea is to keep them enclosed until they are pretty well so far out of date that they're no longer a potential problem if they leach into the groundwater.

Alternately, you can just plain throw them away in their plastic bottles.

That's how I've been doing it, so I hope it's right.

I take my expired meds (and expired vitamins, supplements, etc) to the pharmacist - they have a drug disposal program. I think it depends on the area you live in and whether or not the local/regional/state/provincial/national authority has such a program. I would phone a different pharmacy to see if they have one or know of one.

Throwing meds into the garbage is not a good idea - it's not great in the landfill and who knows who might get hold of them and take them.

Take them to the pharmacy. Most will have a disposal programme. It the safest thing to do both in terms of the environment and in terms of anyone who might find them.
