i am on klonopin and it really does nothing to relieve my anxiety symptoms. i do feel somewhat calmer, but xanax works better for the occasional very upsetting day or situation. my mother has 1mg xanax and i rarely need to take one from her, and usually just use the klonopin 1mg 3x a day.
why won't my dr. give me a prescription for xanax or ativan. i don't abuse it , only use it for when i'm really stressed. how much stronger is ativan and xanax than klonopin?

Doc also differ as to what they prefer given whatever patient experiences they have had. Other meds one might be taking come into play also. There are ALOT of variables.
In addition, there's also the question of if you plan to use a benzo as a maintance med or just as needed. It would appear you desire an as needed use but are on a daily dose?
I suggest a frank talk with your doc. You can also arm yourself with good info you have researched to help to make your point.
Benzo's are meds that sometimes we are required to "prove" we don't abuse and I'm for frequent followup in the beginning stages of use....that practice can fine tune alot of the issues with benzo's and avoid the problems folks can get into.
Hope you work it out.

> thanks glydin. I'll need to have a serious talk with my p-doc as he think i will abuse xanax, when i would not. i just want to have it on hand for major upsets, and take my klonopin as needed too.

Hi vicksnow,
Using a long acting, longer kick in and a short acting burns out quick benzo is a plan a number of anxiety challenged folks do utilize. In particular, if panic attacks are part of their anxiety mix along with generalized anxiety states.
Some docs really do have strong feelings - negative and positive- about benzo's or certain benzo's. My hope is you have a doc willing to hear you and, as team, you can devise a workable plan. I'm lucky in that regard, and it's always my hope for others.
Good Luck,
Glydin
