Just a thought..

Posted by tensor on January 20, 2005, at 14:01:00

Hi,

If there were no AD's available, no ECT etc. Would one ever recover from a major(severe) depression? If so, how long would it possibly take? Assuming normal(sufficient) diet, sun exposure and at least some form of physical exercise every day.

I think a lot of people would recover and do quite well with the regimen of proper diet, sun exposure and physical activity that you mention. As far as how long it would take, I think it's impossible to generalize, everyone is different.

Some would, some wouldn't. Most would just take a lot of street drugs or drink all the time.

I would say, hmm, I dunno. I think people who have had major problems in their lives, child abuse, domestic voilence, death, whatever, they will only really recover through therapy. Other people who are more biologically-orientated might eventually come out of a depression. I think my pdoc said that a depression takes about 8 months to work its way out of your system if left to it's natural course.

Interesting though.

Hi pretty_paints!

>I think my pdoc said that a depression takes about 8 months to work its way out of your system if left to it's natural course.

I also heard a pdoc mentioned that 'you will ultimately get better, what we can do is shorten the time'. This made me wonder if it's actually true. My illnesses are with highest certainty bio-chemical/genetical induced. Many relatives suffer from the same as I. And i'm also one of those who probably need to take meds for the rest of my life, if not a miracle med appear on the market in the future that actually 'cure' the brain.
As hard it is to understand why the brain 'choose' to sink down into a depressive state, as hard is it to understand why it would come back up.
