low dose Celexa? w/ 5HTP or SAM-E

Posted by brodie on January 10, 2005, at 21:51:46

Hi

i just popped my first AD- 20 mg of Celexa a week ago. Had serious, baaaad depression for 3 foggy , anti-social, wishing-for-death months, which I think stems from what I believe is ADD. Felt better within a few days- after 2 days on 20 mg I split the dose to see if i could get away with 10 mg.

it seems ok, i'm not picking daisies or anything but has took the edge off negative thoughts and gave me more energy. Wondering if anyone knows if there is any benefit with sticking with the lowest dose possible. I read somewhere low doses can lead to relapse. or if it is better to go up to 20 mg- "a maintenance dose" whatever that is?

also wondering if anyone has had any experience combining low-dose SSRI w/ L-tyrosine, 5HTP or SAM-E?

thanks, Brodie

Hi Brodie:
I took 10mg of Celexa and found it to work fine. My Pdoc said that he's found 10mg can be therapeutic in a lot of cases. Unfortunately for me, the side effects of Celexa were just as strong at 10mg, so I had to stop to taking it.
I've never taken 5-HTP or SAM-e with Celexa, but I did take Tyrosine for a while with no ill-effects.
I've read that a low-dose of 5-HTP works well with low dose SSRI's. Just make sure the doses are low...serotonin syndrome is a possibility.
Good luck
Jas

Most people who try the other 3 drugs you mentioned do not get very much relief. I would recommend that you stick to prescription drugs since they are definitely more effective, and also probably safer.

I think that you might be able to stay on 10 mg for a while. But don't hesitate to increase it to 20 mg if needed in the future.

If 20 mg doesn't work out, consider increasing the Celexa and/or adding an ADD drug such as Ritalin or Adderall since you have ADD issues.
