Since I stopped Celexa a few days ago.....

Posted by ed_uk on January 6, 2005, at 11:24:57

... I haven't felt that much different. My response to caffeine has changed though. While on Celexa, large doses of caffeine produced virtually no increase in alertness- 60mg Celexa made me rather drowsy. After taking a big dose of caffeine this morning I felt more alert and actually quite jittery. It didn't improve my concentration at all though so I still didn't get much work done :-(

How do SSRIs alter your response to caffeine? ....if at all.

Ed.

Hi Donna!

No, I haven't started anything else. I don't know whether I ever will try anything else either because I can't think of any med that I would like to try that my pdoc would be willing to prescribe! ie. I'm not interested in trying yet another SSRI!

Regards,
Ed x

I dont remember any difference on usual SSRIs, but with Cymbalta, caffeine seemed to be much more powerful. I drink A LOT of coffe, and with Cymbalta, I would get extremely jittery by the end of the day. It did not unfortunately enhance any cognitive-stimulating properties, which of course is what drives my caffeine intake in the first place--to "wake up" my brain, not my body.

Hi Ed UK

Have you been slowly decreasing the Celexa or stopped cold turkey.

I'm really interested to know how you got on. I tried to withdraw from it over a 9 month period with immensely horrible withdrawal reactions....I actually felt like I must have something terminal wrong with me...I was always feeling really ill and had very strange sensations.

Look forward to hearing from you.

I scared you out of taking celexa with all my ramlings of brain dammage. My problem is deeper rooted, please, if it was helping, don't stop on my account.

And that lady who started celexa for postpartum depression. For goodness sake, keep taking it if it was helping.

I say what I feel, but for someone to go untreated because of a stupid comment on my part.

Sorry for being so selfish,

Linkadge

If it were only that easy to control the actions and reactions of others with our own opinions! Go easy on yourself and at the same time give others more credit for being independent thinkers.

SSRIs never seemed to alter my response to caffeine. Some noradrenergics made me completely unable to consume caffeine however.

Hi Link :-)

Please don't feel guilty. I didn't stop the citalopram because of what you said. I don't think you're selfish at all.

Best Regards,
Ed.

Hi!

I have been on 60mg citalopram for about 18 months. I reduced the dose down to 10mg a day for 2 weeks, then I stopped completely. I haven't really noticed any withdrawal symptoms.

Most people need to reduce the dose much more slowly that I did. You could try substituting Prozac for citalopram. It's generally easier to come off.

Regards,
Ed.
