Betahistine (Serc) - Any psychotropic effects?

Posted by ed_uk on December 31, 2004, at 12:12:21

In the UK and many other countries, betahistine is a widely prescribed treatment for Meniere's disease. Betahistine is a histamine analogue. A study from 1985 suggested that betahistine may be a 'partial agonist at cerebral H1-receptors.'
Since H1 antagonists (anti-histamines) often cause drowsiness, I was wondering whether anyone had noticed an increase in alertness while taking betahistine (Serc).

Bethistine is a poorly studied drug- I'm not even sure to what extent it crosses the blood brain barrier. CNS adverse effects have been reported very rarely, I found one report of delirium.

Has anyone ever taken betahistine (Serc)?

Ed.
