Does anybody know equivilant dose for e.g. 250mg primodine to how many phenobarbital mgs?
Thank you,all you experts out there!

Hi Adam,
I think that about 15-25% of a dose of primidone is metabolised to phenobarbital. Phenylethylmalonamide is one of the other metabolites of primidone.
I remember that you said you liked phenobarbital. I get the impression that there is less stigma attached to using primidone than phenobarbital, perhaps because some prescribers are unaware that much of the effect of primidone is due to phenobarbital. Are you thinking of taking primidone?
Ed.
PS. Are you in South Africa at the moment?

I knew you'd be the first to answer! thanx!
Well,I'm in Austria now,and I asked for pheno, but the pharmacist told me is not available and gave me primodine 250mg,so I wanted to know how much phen is inside primodine, like e.g. 250mg = 30mg phen?Unfortunatly I have to leave my PC now,but I'll be back soon....Thank you so much, and awaiting for your opinion about this issue and other questions I have raised in other threads....
Best regards,
Adam.

Hi,
Primidone won't be exactly like phenobarbital because it has got other active metabolites as well as phenobarb. As a result, you can't really say that x mg primidone=y mg phenobarb. Also, the amount of phenobarb produced from a fixed dose of primidone will be subject to interindividual variation. With primidone, you're supposed to start with a very low dose (125mg/day) and increase gradually. Apparantly, side effects can be a problem if you increase too fast or initiate treatment with a dose which is too high- this may occur even if you've previously tolerated high doses of phenobarb well. Take care, be cautious! I wouldn't want you to run into any problems :-) Btw, you make it sound like you bought primidone without a prescription. I wouldn't have thought that that would be possible in Austria. Please tell us more.....
Ed.

Hi Ed,
Well, you got me worried about trying primidone...I think am not going to try it...I have plenty of other better benzos to pick from..I think I will return them to the pharmacy.
Well,as for me purchasing medications,it is my kind of job which allows me to buy any medications I want..but I know that you are kind enough for not asking about my type of job(I'm not a doctor).
Regards,
Adam.

> Well, you got me worried about trying primidone...I think am not going to try it...I have plenty of other better benzos to pick from..I think I will return them to the pharmacy.HI! I wasn't trying to worry you. I just didn't want you to start the primidone at a high dose and then regret it. I know you tolerated high doses of pheno so I was concerned that you might take a really high dose of primidone and 'knock yourself out'. How did pheno compare to a benzo? Did you prefer it?
Are you still happy with bromazepam, alprazolam and lorazepam?

It would be good if you'd send me a babblemail and tell me more :-) I will keep your secret, I promise.
.....or maybe you'll remain a darkhorse.Ed.

> Are you still happy with bromazepam, alprazolam and lorazepam?I'm happy with my benzos, but as I told you before, from time to time I have this desire to "taste" another benzo/sedative if only for a day or 2 (psychological addiction??).I'm trying hard not to have those ideas but it seems that they are like some form of OCD once I take the pill I feel good and my obsessions fade(For a while)...I know that fluoxetine made this issue vanish ,but the weight gain/apathy/teeth grinding/sexual inhibition is a very high price to pay for such an inconvinient obsession.....

Hi Adam,
Thank you, they would be useful but we can't discuss sending them or else Dr. Bob will block us from psycho-babble!
