Anyone in the UK had ECT, wheres the best place?

Posted by denise1904 on December 16, 2004, at 4:01:20

Hi,

I've asked this question before but I was just wondering if there is anyone on the board who's had ECT in the UK and if so is there a particularly reputable and good place to have it?

I suppose I could discuss it with my psychiatrist or my doctor but I've tried that before and they won't even entertain the idea of my having it, I think because they don't see me as being bad enough, I'm not catatonic and I don't have psychosis and I'm still working. But these antidperessants just don't work like they used to and I spend an awful lot of time sleeping (which is nice in a way) I just wish they gave me the energy that they used to give me.

Anyway, I'd be glad for any pointers.

Thanks

Denise

Hey denise I have not had ECT, but I do live in the UK.
The only place I know of that does ECT is the Maudsley hospital in London.

I don't mean to discourage you but I think ECT is only used in the UK as a last resort type of thing.
Have you tried all anti depressent options like MAOIs? Stimulent?

Anyway good luck!

Hi,

Thanks for letting me know, yes I know the Maudsley clinic do it, they also do it in Scotland don't they?

Yes, have tried an Maoi (Nardil) and it didn't really help the depression although seemed to help the anxiety. Haven't tried stimulants as can't get anyone to prescribe them for me and I don't like the ideas of the ups and downs you get with them.

I just feel like although the antidepressants are helping, I still don't feel fully recovered and I suppose I'm just looking for something to blow it away (like a gun perhaps) :-(

I know ECT is only used as a last resort in the uk but I've been feeling like this for over three years now and you hear about people like Marthan Manning having it and she was still working and sort of functioning so not sure why somebody like me couldn't try it.

Anyway, thanks for getting back to me.

I think most hospitals in England which have got a psych unit do ECT. Not sure about the quality though.
