Lamictal-truly weight-neutral?

Posted by banga on December 16, 2004, at 10:02:50

Does anyone gain weight on Lamictal? I seem to have gained some pounds, though I cant say I have the healthiest calorie-conscious diet currently...

I otherwise have liked it. Up to 75 mg. I feel much calmer, a lot of help with anxiety and mood. Just feel dizzy, and I don't know if this is from residual SSRI withdrawal (it does feel like the typical brain zaps) or if it is from the Lamictal. I have both depression and bipolar in my family (both sides!) as well as ADHD, anxiety, alcoholism. Maybe my diagnosis under it all is actually bipolar II and ADD, rather than major depression and GAD--my brain seems to give a sigh of relief on this mood stabilizer!.
And I still have complete braing fog and feelings of unreality. I hope to try a stimulant for that.

I gained weight at doses above 100mg. It also seems to creep up on you the longer you're on it, just like the memory issues. I thought that they would go away with time on it but they only got worse. I've never had a stroke, but felt like I was sometimes on Lamictal, extreme periods of confusion and short term memory loss even at just 100mg.

I'm trying a low dose of 50mg (25mg twice daily), I was at 100mg (50mg twice daily) and have been up to 150mg.

I'm doing this to see if cognitive impairment is reduced and if it is effective at this dose for me. If it isn't, I'll discontinue it completely.

My doc titrated me up to 150mg without stopping to smell the roses along the way, so I'm backtracking.

Keep me updated RE: cognitive difficulties. will be a 100 mg tomorrow. I am having forgetfulness, but I did beforehand so I can't tell if this has worsned, or if in beginning to do more I am more aware of i influencing daily acivities.
Otherwise I like this medication very much. I feel less unstable, and instead of that wired SSRI feeling I feel more cool, calm and collected.

I liked it to. Unfortunately, the cool calm and collected feeling for me made me have no ambition to seek new career or even do things like read or explore new things. I felt at peace but felt like I was on "pause."

Interesting! Now that you mention it, there does seem to be a bit of a "la-di-da" no-motivation state from the Lamictal.
If thats the case, hopefully other meds I add could be more activating.
