Anyone had experiences using drug companies "patient assistance programs" to get their meds? I'm soon to be a starving student, and I think I will be able to use the programs to get my meds. I'm not sure, because you have to actually be in financial hardship and then apply before getting a formal answer from the drug company.
Please share your experiences using these programs. Thanks!

I've used 'em, and they were lifesavers. I got Prozac and Effexor that way for at least a year.
Applications take a while, so you have to apply well in advance of need. The meds are sent to your doctor, not to you, but my doctor mailed them to me so that was OK. They all have their own application process, so you'll have to contact them individually. Worth the trouble, though.

I have the choice between getting a crappy insurance policy that only covers $1000 worth of prescriptions, and the premium is about $150 a month. It almost doesn't seem worth it.
Or I could go without insurance and use the patient assistance programs, assuming that they accept my application. I'll be a student with very little income, and with liquid assets of about $10,000 (which I need to live on while in school).
If I don't get the insurance, then I will have a "lapse in coverage" as far as pre-existing conditions are concerned, should I get a full-time job with health insurance benefits in the future.

The programs are worth it and easy to qualify for, if you have little to no income. If you go to www.needymeds.com, you will find a ton of programs.
