Zyprexa as a one-time sleep aid?

Posted by SDA on December 7, 2004, at 20:51:41

My sleep schedule is pretty much ****ed right now. I stay up all night, go to bed in the afternoon and then sleep into the early evening. My psychiatrist (who also deals with sleep disorders apparently) suggested that I take 5mg of Zyprexa at 10pm, so that I can sleep from ~11pm to 8am. This is only a one time thing; after this I'll have to commit to this schedule on my own.

Does any of this make sense to anyone? I'm a little nervous about it being an antipsychotic (I'm not psychotic at all), even if its only one pill. I also took a 5-6 hour nap in the middle of the day today, so I'm not sure if I'll be tired enough for it to work out.

thanks

This is rather URGENT so please respond if you can

Well, I decided not to take it since I wasn't all that tired (but still felt awful) and didn't want to blow my one shot at this. I'd like some input from you guys as soon as possible. I really don't think I can survive another day without sleep before I become a brain-dead vegetable or something. Before I took my nap yesterday I was up for almost 40 hours with little or no sleep. I've been at this bass ackwards sleeping for about a week now.

Its 4:40am now, and I don't know what to do. I guess I can try sleeping until 9am if I can, and then rough it out until I can possibly take the Zyprexa (or something...) to help me sleep at around 10pm.

Is there any danger of developing permanent side effets like movement disorders from taking just one 5mg pill of Zyprexa? My concren is that I really don't have any reason to take it other than my sleeping. I've been strugling with off-and-on depression and serious brain fog for the last year though, and haven't found a cure for either.

I have taken Zyprexa for sleep issues without any negative side-effects whatsoever. That is a small amount, and for myself, I wouldn't sweat it. I'm not saying its a good idea to use rx meds without doc input, yet you do need some shut-eye. Also, you might want to consider melatonin (which doesn't require a script) to give you some much needed rest. Zyprexa can really help with getting some sleep. So does low dose Remeron, Amitriptyline, and Trazadone (in order of what I prefer for best sleep induction and quality).

It does seem rather common for docs to prescribe low-dose antipsychotics or antidepressants to help with sleep. I know when my brother was very ill and needed sleep he was also prescribed an antipsychotic for sleep.
