Social anxiety, losing hope!

Posted by TheOutsider on December 7, 2004, at 17:53:51

Nothing works for my SA appart from GHB which I can no longer get hold of!

SSRIs don't help, Clomipramine didn't help, diazapam doesn't help.
I'm not very suprised that these meds don't help, the thing that really upset me is that Clonazepam doesn't help either, I thought this was supposed to be one of most effective meds for SA, it does help somewhat, but it leaves me so foggy headed and depressed that the bad effects outweigh the good.

My last hope is either an MAOI(!)or Pregabalin, but to quote Tolkin this seems "Only a fools hope".
Perhapse I was just meant to be alone for the rest of my life, and I'm being punished for something? I feel like I should just give up.

Sorry for spelling I am dyslexic, also sorry if I sound whiny.

I have had the same experiences with med like you. Klono workedbut made me foggy and depressed.

I already tried some Lyrica, it worked but not as consitintly as klono. I only tried it couple of days. The last 2-3 days at 600mg it felt like sugar pill. But now I miss it, so I can say it worked! The max I was at is 600mg.

It gives the relief as the klono but without sedation, memory loss, and depression. But it's not as consistent, maybe I shiuld have tried a highr dose.

Tomorrow I will ask my doc for it again and this time I want to take it along with 0.5mg Klono and see what happens, and some 50-100mg sulpride for the dopamine and some TCA for noradrenaline.

When I tried klono, sulpride, edronax together, I felt that 90% of the problem gone away!!

You still have pregabalin and the MAOI, so please don't lose hope!

Take care,
Kristel

Hi there. I have had SA since I was little, and have tried lots of things. Klonopin helps, and so does Provigil. You may want to try Provigil. The biggest thing of all that helped me was cognitive behavioral therapy. I very highly recommend "Feeling Good" by Dr. David Burns. It's best to get the cognitive behavioral therapy with a therapist who specializes in it, and you can use the book alongside your therapy. CBT was a huge turning point in my battle against social anxiety.

my 2 cents...

Xanax-XR with Inderal-LA worked better for me than Klonopin or antidepressants or anything else

But in order to try and use CBT to handle the anxiety I've switched to nadolol (the only once-a-day beta-blocker that works to block just peripheral anxiety via beta-1 and beta-2 receptors and doesn't get into the brain much at all, at least not as much as Inderal does, so I know that any progress I make in handling things is due to changes I'm making in my brain using CBT and not the nadolol doing it for me in my brain, then if and when I feel confident enough with my CBT skills then I'll slowly wean off nadolol and not have to worry about any brain chemistry withdrawal stuff)

I'm hoping ultimately that my CBT skills alone will do the trick, otherwise I guess Xanax-XR with Inderal-LA is my back-up plan

I don't think MAOIs are a fool's hope, really...

I know there seems to be lack of knowledge about them in the UK but they aren't as demonised as things like clonazepam. Whereas you will be hard pressed to find a pdoc actually *willing* to prescibe benzos long term - I think a LOT of pressure would be needed - there are many doctors who are perfectly willing to prescribe maois without much persuasion. My view is somewhat skewed as both of my 2 psychs were willing to rx nardil. I don't really have any recommendations atm but I just wanted to point out that obtaining maois in the uk is *no where near impossible*... if push comes to shove I can always give you the names of my doctors :)

Sorry to interrupt, but I'd like to redirect follow-ups regarding CBT to Psycho-Babble Psychology. Here's a link:

I must confess I've not heard of nadolol before, but why do you prefer the Xanax-XR/Inderal-LA combo to nadolol?

Just want to thank you for adding your personal recommendations re: XanaxXR and a beta blocker. I took this info to my pdoc today and she is more than willing to add a beta blocker to the Xanax XR that I'm currently taking. Can you tell me more about Nadolol? The only beta blocker I've ever been on, and it was over 10 years ago, was Inderal. It caused my already low blood pressure to drop to the point that my internist was concerned. Thanks for your help.
