Adderall Update!! And the DEA!!!

Posted by Eljakeo25 on November 23, 2004, at 22:43:28

Hey I want to thank the guys who have read my past posts about the Provigil, adderall combo I was on. There was a period recently I was off of adderall and provigil because they ran out early. I usually follow the doctors prescriptions, but I started needing more doses of adderall throughout the day for it to be effective. It is interesting because I have been on adderall for 3 years and this is the first time I am actually starting to become tolerant to it's longer lasting effects. I would never need more than 15mg-20mg at once, but the benificial effects would only last a couple hours, thus I would dose 5-6 times a day. This is because, not only am I trying to relieve ADD amotivation and restlessness, but I was try to push myself to the best with my studies (which my dream is to get all A's) don't get me wrong. With a high IQ, even on adderall I still struggle academically, eventhough aquisition of the material is easy for me. So no adderall is not cheating in school as some people say. For me, it's just a tool, otherwise I would not even be able to make it to class. But unfortunately I was taking 80-100mg of adderall a day. That would be the extreme upper limit theraputic dose of this drug. I never take it for fun and never have the craving to take it like a cigarette for example. It was interesting, they were doing a blood pressure screening in the library in the evening when I had about 80mg/day worth of adderall in me. My BP was 116/72! and it was checked twice(117/74) Heart rate 85 bpm. SO yes, even at the higher dosages, in my case adderall has a paradoxical effect on my body, it lowers blood pressure and I am able to relax. 11:00pm rolls around and I am to out like a lamp in bed! I believe the higher dosages are a result of tolerance and a super fast metabolism. I believe that I metabolize the drug extremely quickly and therefore leaves my system quicker. Thus the tolerance would increase. THe adderall still does its job good...just for 2 hours instead of 4 or 6. Recently my pdoc has been helping me get slightly more adderall to help this situation, but overall, because we both know I do not want to become addicted, options for continued use are becoming limited. My doctor has already gotten a couple letters from the DEA from the capitol of my state flacking him about giving me too much adderall. And he really was not overdoing it that much. He is a great doc with four degrees. But he points out just how much the Drug Enforcment Agency knows about how much adderall is being dispensed!! BY EACH DOCTOR!! However, this is coming at the same time that I may need to switch medictions. Since my doctor will be out of town, he wrote me one more prescription for adderall, until DEC 16th, but it will be the last. WE will have to try something different. My best best bet would be to try Concerta, it is more like ritilan, but with it's unique release method, it may keep my symtoms at bay for longer eventhough it may not be as strong as adderall. Also a possibility would be to trial Cylert. Now I know there is a Liver risk with it, but if it would work, I wouldn't mind getting my liver checked every month. Heck, you have to do it if you take Depakote for bi polar. And Cylert is schedule 4 I believe. Also I will be getting my Provigil refilled in the next couple of days. The reason I am ran out of that early is that I have approval from the doctor to take the effective 600 mg dosage for me, but he can only prescribe 400mg..so I have to go off of it for a week...no biggie. But I am concerned. If Concerta or Cylert does not work, I am not sure if Provigil can help alone. I will be starting an intensive therapy program, so that would help for my cognitive behavioral functioning and maybe that will help me not need as much medication. But if that is ineffective, I am not sure if there is anything out there that would work as well as the adderall only longer and non tolerant. WEllbutrin does not do anything, Cymbalta relieve some of my depressive symptoms but does not help with ADD type amotivation and restlessness. SO makes me think that Strattera will not be effective either. L-dopa and stuff like that would not work because its not a matter of not having enough dopamine. I probably produce a normal amount of Dopamine, its more of a matter enough dopamine getting from one part of the brain to the other hence (ADD) Any thoughts. They need to make a true SDRI Selective Dopamine Reuptake inhibitor...that is not amphetamine or cocaine! lol. Finally, my pdoc says I am a very smart student, and when I graduate, my pdoc wants to take my mom and I out for dinner for my accomplishments!!! how about that one!! =) Thanks guys for your support.

A SDRI? I fully agree that one is needed. Somebody call Lilly and get them to work on this one asap... PLEASE.

I'm tired of having the DEA involved in the meds I take (I refuse to be lumped in with the meth lab junkies) that are legally prescribed and used solely for medicinal purposes.

Hi,

Do you take Medical Methamphetamine (DESOXYN)?

Cheers

No I currently take adderall. I sorta mentioned Desoxyn to my doctor and sorta tries to change the subject.."they all work the same" I know Despxyn would last longer, but would be more habit forming potentially. And if the DEA is writing letters for adderall, I would never be put on Desoxyn, but if we would live in a free drug society, I would not mind trying it for a month and see what happens, but remember a lot of doctors are hesitant when it comes to stimulants, exspecially if your an adult. Because it is the government that controls what you take, not the doctors. Heck its the same government that granted me social security benifits saying that I have a severe disability that requires the use of the drugs. But I guess I will give concerta a try. As non of the Newer anti depressants does not give the relief effects of adderall and I don't think Strattera will work if the Cymbalta is not working for ADD because their both Norep. inhibitors. With my hospitilizations, the doctors were really pushing me to make sure the meds made me more awake, the more awake I am the more motivated I become. We shall see.

My question was directed at Kotsunega, but thanks for for reply Eljakeo,
Desoxyn would not necessarily last longer. Now that all the SR (Guademet) forms have been discontinued, I know people who take the only remaining form (5mg IR) several times a day 3-4. It would not necessarily be more habit forming, but most people who somehow have tried it, say it is the most alerting-stimulating of the Stims.

You have been Hospitalised for ADD?
The Docs are wanting your meds to increase your wakefullness?
Then in this serious scenario, I don't see why a trial of Desoxyn shouldn't be initiated, if other less potent Stims have? shown to be less than effective for you.

Cheers
