One last try to conquer anxiety without benzos...it seems that one of the things that some drugs had in common--the ones that helped anxiety--provided 5HT2a antagonsim. (Clomipramine and Geodon and Risperdal) Is there anything out there that is a 5HT2a antagonist that doesn't cause awful side effects, like weight gain and/or foggy brain?

We kind of have a lacking of high quality 5-ht2a antagonists out there.
Suprisingly risperdal, might be the most selective we have. Risperdal has a high affinity for 5-ht2a in comparison to dopamine blockade.
Trazedone might also be a good choice (not too bad side effect profile)

Eplivanserin is a selective 5-HT2A receptor antagonist in phase II clinical trials. That means that it won't be available for a few years. You can check out JR's list (http://www.neurotransmitter.net/newdrugs.html) for information about other drugs in clinical trials that affect that receptor and others.

Thanks for the responses! Problem with Risperdal is both fatigue and the prolactin and weight gain...with trazodone, given its sedation, do you think it is something that could be taken at night but with time the effects of the 5HT2 blockade set in and last all day?

Won't it be more than a few years? I've looked at some of those drugs that are in phase three now and they were in phase II/phase III over TEN years ago! It is soooo frustrating
