Hassles to get a small klonopin dosage increase!!!

Posted by Colleen D. on November 15, 2004, at 18:43:28

I called my pdoc's med nurse to tell her I was getting low on klonopin and that I'd like to increase it from .25mg 3 times a day to .5mg 3 times a day. The nurse was very stern sounding like I was asking for something that my pdoc doesn't normally do. She asked for a rundown of my symptoms and said I'd have to be seen by the doc again to possibly get an increase. Geez. I just saw him about a month ago and he said his intent was to start me at a low dose and increase it if needed. I was so unhappy with the way I was "talked to" by that nurse that I almost told her where to go. What's the big deal with going from .75mg to 1.5mg daily!!! I HAVE GAD AND OCD for heaven's sake!!! ARRRGGGGGGGHHHHH!

Thanks for listening (and responding, if you choose to do so.)

Colleen

I would bring the incident up with the doc the next visit you have or, better yet, call and request the doc make a return call to you seeing as the doc knows the plan you and they discussed.

Increasing to a good maintence dose should not be a "big deal" and is part of the process for good treatment. I do suggest, on your next appt., you discuss a dosage range, that way you can titrate. Some doc are receptive to this and some aren't but this plan has worked well for me for 3 years and it is the ONLY med I take.

Sorry you had that encounter.

I love how we all get criminalized if we use benzos or if we want an increase. Your dose is already low and what you are requesting is not too high either especially since you have been needing more. It sounds like you have to go to the doctor which is annoying, but it doesn't sound like he will deny your request. I would tell him how you felt about the nurse questioning your need for it and acting like it was totally unreasonable. Good luck.

Funny for all the so called scares benzos produce, its funny cause like you klonopin is the only med that stayed true time tested.I have used this med over 5 yrs as needed and to this day still respond to speific doasages in the same way.

And this is even after one point trying to use klonpin as main treatment and raising the dose for an extended period of time.

When i choose to end the trial,i went back to my normal small as needed dosage without any tolerance or addiction. If any of the other meds were as consistent in its effects as klonopin is i would have been well off a long time ago.

Looking back now,i was so scared to take the med now i understand it was what saved me through many sssri washouts and withdrawals,as well as keeping my job in times of anxiety growing to levels of impairing functioning.

I would be surprised if your doc refuses your request,if so then there is something wrong with the relationship.Untreated anxiety can loose jobs,or worse, she should hear you out,i bet there is no hesititation when a new sample box of some new AD is given you,why then on a med that is known to be already helping?

Note: Im sure im not the only one who read a big report done on a certain docter who used klonopin for brain seizures and put all his credability on the claim in certain instances it can be nuero-protective.Well anxiety untreated has to be doing some type of harm,id take a shot in the dark and guess in the case of severe anxiety small pieaces of klonopin are also nuero protecive, lord knows for me it has felt like ice on a fire sometimes, and if that sounds like abuse, well then we are far from any understanding of these disorders.

this is a drug war and to "win" we must prevent anxiety/pain patients from getting propper treatment. us anxiety sufferers are just addicts trying to get drugs anyway and so are dying cancer/aids pateints.

Here is some advice. Doctors do not like prescribing controlled substances like klonopin over the phone. They like increasing the dosage from over the phone interviews even less. If you want an increase in dosage of klonopin, your best bet is to ask for it in an actual office visit.

If that doesnt work, find another doctor who isnt benzo-phobic.

Shalom
