Trileptal vs Lamictal

Posted by BRC on November 12, 2004, at 16:36:34

Hi, I am not Bi-polar but I have found that Trileptal helps with my OCD thoughts. I take 1,800mg. I read tons of post on here about Lamictal. I know that Trileptal is used as a mood stabilizer. But it seems that everyone takes this Lamictal.

What is the difference and which is better.

Just curious,

BRC

I prefer trileptal

Lamictal is a good med, as is trileptal...the real difference for me were the side effects. Lamictal gave me stomach aches, headaches, and a rash (the rash is not common in lamictal users, but it's not exactly rare, either). Trileptal, on the other hand, didn't seem to present any problems. Each dose increase helped me sleep better for a few days and I didn't really have side effects. Trileptal, as you probably know, is just tegretal with an added oxygen molecule...this cleans up the tegretal in terms of side effects. The problem is trileptal isn't as well studied for bipolar or other disorders as tegretal or lamictal, so a lot of docs stick to the tried and true. Other docs treat trileptal just as cleaned-up tegretal and Rx it frequently.

Hi - I'm on Trileptal for boderline personality disorder. I take 1200mg and my doc says I'll go up to at least 6 or 8 pills a day - 1800-2400mg. No side effects for me at all and it really helps my crazy mood swings but I'm still me - not foggy at all. I guess the problem with it is that it can be kind of weak for some people. But Lamictal can have awful effects like skin rashes and stuff. I like Trileptal even though its a lot of pills a day.

Hi, Trileptal comes in a 600mg pill so you don't have to take as many pills during the day.

I assume you are taking the 300mg pills.

Do you take any other meds?
