Thinking about trying a low dose of Paxil (10mg) or Paxil CR (12.5) for social anxiety.
I'm confused about which one to try? I took 20mg regular Paxil before with no side effects besides sexual, but my pdoc mentioned Paxil CR might hit different receptors in the lower bowel?
Any input from folks with experience between the two?

I don't exactly know what your doctor means.
The only real difference between paxil and paxil CR, is that the CR version is released more gradually, and hence you may not have a whammy of side effects all at once (like with immediate release)
You may also find it affects your mood more evenly throughout the day. (I found with regualr paxil, my mood would take a dive before the next dose, but the CR version did not do this)
I think what he means is that because the paxil CD is coated, it would likely not release its contents in the stomach, and perhaps avoiding some nausia)
If regualr paxil worked for you then there is nor reason that paxil CR would not.

Paxil CR does indeed skip your stomach and doesn't release until it gets into your lower bowels. The only benefit I could see with CR is if regular Paxil gives you stomach problems.
My pdoc did mention CR may effect receptors differently because it does release in your lower bowels versus your stomach. Who knows.

So if you were to choose between the two you would take the CR?

Yes, both drugs work the same basic way. Paxil is an SSRI, it doesnt work via receptor blockade. It works via serotonin reuptake. Both Paxil and Paxil CR work via this method of serotonin reuptake. The main difference is Paxil CR is longer lasting and does not have the Paxil withdrawal the old Paxil has.Shalom
