MILNACIPRAN (Ixel/Oxitriptan/Dalcipran/Toledomin)

Posted by Lilith on November 13, 2004, at 13:13:47

Cymbalta's ratio of norepinepherine:serotonin is 1:10. Effexor's N:S is 1:30. Milnacipran's N:S ratio is SIGNIFICANTLY DIFFERENT AT 3:1--VIRTUALLY NO SIDE-EFFECTS. Milnacipran, an SNRI, is currently in Phase III clinical trials for treatment of Fibromyalgia and neurogenic pain in general. It was has been used VERY SUCCESSFULLY as an SNRI antidepressant [only] in many foreign countries for SEVERAL years. The U.S. patent is for the EXTENDED RELEASE formulation. WHY CAN'T WE GET THIS MEDICATION IN IT'S CURRENT 2X/DAY FORMULATION FOR DEPRESSION IN THE U.S. pending the [presumed] FDA approval and release of the XL formulation???

I didn't realize that this medication was pending approval here at all in any form. The limited research I did on milnacipran a while back didn't indicate that it was that effective for depression. What research have you found on this drug? I would be very glad to learn that my first impression is wrong.

Just want to say that I tried Milnacipran, and although it was very clean in its "physical" side effects....however it caused severe irritation and agitation from the begining,I was so argumentive and on the edge and aggressive....I also read from an older post the same effect, and, since I lived in Austria , it was not the AD of choice and never gained popularity....any way this is my experience and I'm sure that it helps some people,I just wanted to say that do not expect great things ..

If I may ask, what was/is your diagnosis? Did/do you have a dual diagnosis? Were you taking any other psychotropic medications at the time you tried Milnacipran?

I beg pardon if I mislead...Milnacipran isn't exactly "pending approval" in the U.S., but it looks very promising considering it has made it to a 2nd round of Phase III clinical trials. I also just realized this week that this includes ALL of North America--the U.S. AND Canada--so my plan to acquire some from Canada just blew out the window.

Plan B: I'm going to mail order from Great Britain, and my psychopharmacologist is willing to manage and monitor. "I'll be back..."

Meanwhile, I thank everyone for his/her responses and feedback. When sharing, I always keep in mind that each person is a unique individual with unique biochemistry and, therefor, experience unique responses to medications. Since there is no cure for my illness, I can only strive for the best possible balance. And folks, this is written by someone with a VERY strong aversion to Pollyanna types on even a GOOD day.

I hope it works out for you! Please let us know how it goes.
