I just stopped taking depakote which I was taking for severe migraines. It was working great however it was causing weight gain. So, my doc chnged it to topomax, i was excited because it was says it causes weight loss, but Ive been on 25 mg for 3 days and Im still starving? Maybe Im defective! Any input would be great?

I just began Topamax three weeks ago, but at a much lower, compounded dosage. I'm just up to ~50 mg. Typically, the lowest effective and maintenance dosage for migraine prophylaxis is anywhere from 50mg - 100mg/day.
I only became aware of the appetite supressing effect at about ~40mg. That was when I noticed an improvement in the migraines, too. (I'm very sensitive to meds so I might only require the lower dosage to prevent migraines--who knows.) I began a very small, gradual increase because it is VERY sedating; thus, the nickname "Dopamax"!
As for hunger, what other meds are you taking? Any SSRI's--serotonin enhancing meds, i.e. Zoloft, Paxil, Effexor, etc? They ALL make me RAVENOUS! Good, yet "evil".
Hang in there. The headache relief is WORTH it even if you don't lose weight. (My words are not meant to minimize your feelings because I DO understand the desperate "NEED" to lose weight--I hear you.)

i am not much help. i just started topamax 4 days ago. i was on zyprexa for 2 weeks and gained 7 pounds, so my doc recommended top. i am on it for a mood stabalizer. i will keep you posted. sorry i am not much help. but i have stopped drinking sodas since i started taking it and i have the need to eat healthy which is really not like me. i am really thrilled with it so far. i am on 50mlg a day.
