Provigil alone?

Posted by Dan Perkins on November 11, 2004, at 15:57:48

Does anybody take just Provigil for major unipolar depression or is it always used to augment other antidepressants.

If anyone has taken just Provigil, please let me know how well it worked and if/how it was different from other antidepressants.

Thanks

Provigil is actually in the stimulant class (Schedule IV) and is not classified as an antidepressant. It is approved for certain sleep disorders and is sometimes used off-label to treat depression and/or ADD. Yes, it can be used by itself. My own experience, FWIW, was very unusual, as it caused an absolutely intolerable level of sedation and sleepiness. Typically, it will have the exact opposite effect, as one of the main uses of this drug is to treat people, who for instance, are so sleepy that they fall asleep in the middle of the day during other activities.
