Has anyone tried zonegran for bipolar mania? I see it is used for bipolar depression. If you have used it for bipolar mania please let me know how it is working. My psychiatrist wants to know
Thanks

I use it for migraines (switched from Topomax due to side effects). It has less side effects than Topomax and is used just like topomax. Many who use Topomax for Bipolar have switched to Zonegran, however, I do not know the characteristics of Bipolar depression versus mania, as that is not the reason I use it.
All I know is from the people who use it for Bipolar and for migraines, it works as well as Topomax, with less side effects.
I hope this helps.

> ThanksI tried it twice (about two weeks apart). I had a prounounced nasty temper flareup for two or three days that I couldn't attribute to anything else. I waited a couple of weeks and then tried it again and it happened again. Didn't stop any of my other meds. That's highly anecdotal--and there are an unusually large number of meds that can make me dysphoric--I get mixed-state-like reactions. It might work fine for you though.

Hi mmerrynick,
I take Zonegran for Bipolar II, along with Effexor Xr. Zonegran has been a real life saver for me...it has been a true "mood stabilizer". I have not had any major mood swings either way, hypomanic or depressed. I have felt in control, able to concentrate, and not so overwhelmed by life.
Good luck, and let me know if you have any other questions,
Sooshi

Thanks for the information. I am curious if you could tell me if you had any side effects from the zonegran. If so, what are they? Also, did your pdoc taper you off of lithium to put you on zonegran? If so how did he do it? Thanks tons, Mmerrynick

Hi mmerrynick,
The only side effect I had from Zonegran was a little sleepiness when starting it, which eventually wore off. I take it at night. I literally have no other side effects from it. I personally do not have any cognitive side effects at all...no stupids, etc. Actually, it has cleared up my thinking.
I was taking Topomax, not Lithium, before switching to Zonegran. I tapered very quickly off the Topomax with no side effects, other than an incredible sense of relief from the release of Topo's side effects! I started Zonegran immediately after the last dose of Topo.
Good luck,
Sooshi

The only side effect I've experienced is also fatigue -in the morning. Even though I take it at night.
I'm taking it for anxiety, I guess it's really mood stabilization. Well actually it's so I can get off of Serzone which I've had a terrible time getting off of. Serzone is great, but now it's been taken off the market I'm so annoyed as I get down to 150 and crack up.
Anything people got to say about getting off Serzone and using Zonegran instead I'd be interested in.
This is the end of the thread.
