HELP!!!!! Allergic To Wellbutrin need advice

Posted by liberty2004 on November 5, 2004, at 15:14:13

Hi,I am a 28 year old female who took Paxil for five years. The med worked great except it totally killed my sex drive. I called my doc and he switched me to Wellbutrin. It worked great,in fact it increased my sexual desire greatly. After taking it for two weeks I broke out in hives all over my body, I went to my doctor and of course I was allergic to it. I am now taking Effexor and getting the same results I did with Paxil. I am devestated that I can't take the Wellbutrin because of how well it worked for me. I was taking the generic form and I guess my question to everyone is has anyone heard of anyone that was allergic to generic Wellbutrin and not the actual brand. I really need some info and thanks in advance.

I've heard of people taking antihistamines in cases like this. I am not a doctor or an allergy expert and do not know how prudent this is, but if I were in your place, I might do a little research on it. Rashes/allergies to Wellbutrin seem pretty common, unfortunately. My observation is that it seems to be the worst of the antidepressants in this regard.

Parnate is probably the drug most similar to Wellbutrin in the antidepressant class in its dopaminergic action and resultant sexual effects. Parnate also seems to have a tendency to cause rashes, but I do not believe it is bad as Wellbutrin. Of course, Parnate is an MAOI with all the consequent dietary and drug restrictions. Nortriptyline is a tricyclic AD that is noted for not generally causing sexual side effects. You might notice a little dry mouth and constipation, but I would personally take that over no sex drive.

I got feeling of itching all over after 6 weeks of taking Wellbutrin. It is common to have an allergic reaction to it. You will just have to keep trying as I did. I am on Lexapro now.

Wellbutrin is actually a unique 'stimulant' -- just applied as an antidepressant. A phenylthylamine - keto-amphetamine. Take whatever works for your depression; and to curb the sexual side effects thereof I would recommend an 'as needed' stimulant like dextroamphetamine (1/2 5mg pid prn #30). Good luck

Matt

yes itching is common but i had hives the size of my hand all over my body. Just to update every one I contacted my doctor yesterday and asked to try the Wellbutrin XL which at first he was hesitant but then agreed. I will let everyone know what happens and please hope for the best for me. Thanks to everyone who responded.

I had an allergic reaction to Wellbutrin and broke out in a rash all over my body. Before giving up on Wellbutrin, my doctor switched me to a different formulation on the hunch that it might be the inactive ingredients in the pills that was the source of the problem, and he was right. No more rash. However, I also know that he would not have let me continue with the med if the allergy had continued. He said it was too dangerous. I'm taking Wellbutrin currently with no side effects at present.

I can't remember what I switched from and to, but I think the problem emerged when I switched to the the SR formula from the original formula. I'd have to go back and research notes to know for sure. In any case, I do believe its worth trying the other formulas before giving up on it.
