Depression from Trileptal?

Posted by upsndowns on November 3, 2004, at 13:16:27

I am bipolar II, take Abilify 5mg and Concerta, 18mg and the doc just added Trileptal. I find that I am becoming increasingly incapacitated and down, rather than feeling better. Any experience with this drug? Oh, I am taking 150mg. As you can see, I am extremely sensitive and take lesser doses of meds; example is that 7.5mg of Abilify has me climbing the walls and jumping out of my skin with paranoia.

Trileptal definately made me more depressed. Have you tried lithium or lamictal.

Lamictal gives me a rash, I am toxic with lithium. Doesn't look good, does it? I am open to any other suggestions anyone out there may have. I see a really good psychopharmacologist, but we are running out of options rapidly.

You could try some zyprexa, topomax, gabapentin.

You could also try riluzole, an antigutamatergic drug with some AD properties.

Thanks, Linkadge. I follow the board regularly and have found you have a wealth of ideas, suggestions and knowledge. Other than anything with GABA effect, these are new to me and will go with me to the next appt......if I can last that long without dissolving into tears at every little thing. This site has been a lifesaver, for real, many times.

Have you ever tried Keppra (levetiracetam)? Or, for that matter, aniracetam or piracetam. This may not mean anything, but I find that aniracetam (Ampamet) really evens out my moods. Also, you could try taking a cholinesterase inhibitor like Aricept. They can be anti-manic, but one has to start very low and go slowly to make sure depression isn't worsened.

Thanks, Chairman for your suggestions. I am seeing my doc on Monday. My main issue appears to be that I do not have any manic highs, just those nasty irritable hypomanic lows and depression, with an occasional good hour thrown in, so I do not need a med which will keep me from going up too far, I need something which will help me go up even a little bit! Does that make any sense? I am questioning the validity of any mood stabilizer at this point. It seems the stimulants send me lower as well, or at least make me irritable and/or anxious.
