Taking 60mg Celexa - can I go higher if needed?

Posted by tampagirl70 on November 2, 2004, at 14:28:34

I've been taking 40mg Celexa for about 4 months and after seeing my pdoc, cut it down to 30mg. I've had a setback and he raised it to 60mg Sunday. How high can I go with Celexa? I'm afraid I'll reach the ceiling and then be stuck with no where to go? How long will it take for the increase to take effect?

80mg is not as uncommon as you may think. Personally I would stay on a reasonable dose, and then augment with wellbutrin or desipramine. See some of the above posts.

Your lack of responce may be more related to the mechanism of celexa. Ie combining noradrenic and serotogenic mechanisms can often yeild a better responce.

Linkage is correct. I have read clinical studies, and heard anecdotally from my father's psychiatrist (yes, don't laugh, we're a family of loons) that Celexa, do to its extraordinary selectivity, and relatively weak potency at its site of action, can be raised to levels as high as 120mg. Beyond this, I personally have never heard it being done, but I'd bet that it could be raised even higher without any serious adverse effects.

I can say that I have taken doses of 60mg of Lexapro to no ill effect at all when I felt depression creeping up at my 40mg dose. Of course, since Lexapro is 2-4x as potent (depending on which studies you actually believe) as Celexa, that would have put me at an equivalent dose of 120-240mg of Celexa. So, I'd say you've still got room to experiment with.

Hope this helps and best wishes,
Justin

My doctor had told me you can go as high as you want. He gave an example of taking 4 of the 40 mg pills as a posibility, guess that would be 160 mg. The highest I ever took was 80 mg. Now I take 60.
