Is it possible I have too much GABA? Valium makes me instantly depressed, and Depakote is the worst thing I have ever taken. Maybe what I need is the opposite of a benzo, does something like this exist?
Thanks
Rick

Hi Rick. You could try Provigil (modafinil). It works to release a neurotransmitter called glutamate, which in turn reduces GABA.

Stimulants such as Ritalin or dextroamphetamine would be your best bet. Like Scott said, Provigil works very well for some too, and glutamate is the primary brain excitatory neurotransmitter that opposses the actions of GABA. I think amphetamine or Ritalin would be better, but Provigil would be more subtle.
Good Luck,
Justin

Thanks Scott and Justin,
I have tried Provigil and when it works it's great, but some days it does nothing. I'm trying to find a new doc and don't know how much I should say about meth and other drug abuse 20 yrs ago. I have been honest with the doctors I have seen. I'm trying to find a new one now and maybe I won't mention it since it seems to freak them out.
Thanks
Rick

Hmm..
Do you think you could handle a script for an amphetamine or ritalin, or do you think it may be another short-path to addiction?Just trying to help you out. I'm not sure what to tell you about what to tell your doctor about the meth problem. God knows I've witheld info about previous addictions to my pdocs b4. If it's been 20 years though, you'll probably be okay with a script for a stim, and your pdoc will most likely be too.
Good luck,
Justin

I probably just need to find the right doctor, I posted above about a good pdoc in my area but so far no response.
Thanks

Wish I could give my excess anti gaba chemicals and you give me your gaba... haha. Anyway the most easy test (although not perfect) in my mind would be to try caffeine at a dose of at least 200 mgs. It definetly decreases gaba and seems to help folks like yourself. For me this would make me a mess. Tom

Well I guess it's always something, if you can figure out a way you are welcome to it. I do take caffeine 400-600 mg a day. It helps but is unpleasant in a way Provigil and methamphetamine aren't.
Thanks
