back from 2 week stay at hospital.

Posted by linkadge on October 25, 2004, at 17:18:00

I'm back from a two week stay at the hospital.
I feel ok, but very low since my whole simester and $2500 is gone for nothing.

I don't know if I made any progress while at the hospital. I am doubting my ability to continue and complete anything.

(((linkadge))) nothing is for nothing - I am sorry you are low. The money is not a waste, because you are here to post to us. Tell us what happened, if you can.
I am listening.

Basically I went to the hospital for suicidal ideation. I am now taking celexa, depakote, and lithium. It is difficult returning to my residence because I have missed too much class to salvage this simester so I will need to just do my best next semester.

Linkadge,
Are the meds helping you? Or do you feel like you're being dumped before you're ready?
What's it like going back to residence?
Lots of hugs from here,

Just think you can do it. If the $$ are from tuition, you may get it back if you write the school. You got help at the hospital, use it to move on and prove you can make it with out the hospital.

Linkage,
I'm so glad you went and that you got some help. I hope you find in the long run that things are getting better.

I absolutely agree with Sebastian that you may have options at school. I had to drop out of an assistantship due to increasing depression. I was hoping they would at least pro-rate from the time I had put in, but they actually left the stipend totally in place. Also, you may be able to take some incompletes. Please try talking to your Dean or professors. I'm sure that there is some recourse. Every little bit helps.

I also know that it must feel really rotten to be in this position at school, and at a time when you might not be feeling your strongest. Whatever happens, you will get through it. You have so far. I'm glad for you for that.

Warmly,
gg

Glad to see you back Linkadge.... I was way from the board for a while too.
I agree with everyone else, try to get a "do-over" due to medical reasons, I'm sure your doctors will support that with documentation.
I hope you were ready to leave the hosp. Are you getting good/frequent follow-up care?
Focus on geting stronger for next semester and put this one behind you. Hugs from me too.
Jas

Be patient with yourself. You need time to heal, and putting pressure on yourself will only make you feel worse. With respect to your tuition, I think Sebastian has a point. If you have medical proof that you were unable to complete the semester, you may be able to get your money back, or at least some of it. It may be worth pursuing with the school's administration. If I am remembering correctly, I think you had mentioned in previous threads that you were dealing with a counsellor at the school. That person, along with a medical certificate, would help demonstrate that there were medical reasons. There must a policy at the school for situations like this.

Anyways, try hang in there. There is light at the end of every tunnel. We sometimes just can't see it right away because of the pain we are experiencing.

It's completely normal to feel emotionally vulnerable and fragile after a hospital stay. I have been in the hospital too and the weeks after can be strange. I know you are disappointed about the semester, but looking back, I wish I had dealt with my problems in my 20s like you are doing. Maybe years from now, you will look back and realize it was the right thing. Just be gentle with yourself.

What are your doses? What did they tell you in the hospital? Recurrent depressions forced me out of school a few times in the past. The first time I was totally unmedicated and untreated/undiagnosed and couldn't get out of bed to go to school (early Spring semester in Winter). Good thing I stumbled across my brother-in-law's unused amitriptyline script. Hope you get better soon.

I hope you feel better soon linkadge. I agree with everyone else that your school administration must have some way to help salvage your money or your classes or both. They must have a policy for helping students with medical problems. I'm on medical leave right now from grad school- with no time limit. And I left halfway through exams in my final semester.

I also wanted to let you know that I had a college semester in which I got almost all failing grades and incompletes due to depression. I didn't ask for help, so it stayed on my transcript with no explanation. I had great grades from then on, but I was sure that one bad semester would keep me out of grad schools. Much to my surprise, I got in everywhere I applied- the admissions people and employers look at what you've done most recently. In short- you can be redeemed.

Take care of yourself. Things will work out.

Ug. I am in math, and can see my best marks as being the first year grades, and things from this point going down hill. It gets harder and more complex. I hope a potential employer would look at all marks in my case.
