Weight gain with Triletptal?

Posted by lelebug on October 7, 2004, at 21:58:24

My pdoc says that Trileptal won't make you gain weight. But I'm pretty sure the extra 20 pounds i've added since I started it has something to do with it. I mean just the way it makes me lethargic and sleepy. Maybe it's because I'm less active. I don't know. I would like to know if anyone else has had the same effect? Or if you've lost weight. Actually any way that it has affected you weight wise. Also when you got off of it, did you lose the weight? Thanks.

I've gained 20-30 pounds also. First I was on Depakote and that added the first 10. I got off of that and got on Trileptal and have added the rest of it since then. I've been lethargic and unmotivated so that I'm sure is part of the problem but I've also had a bigger appetite. I am trying to lose the weight now and it is very slow going.

I feel so much better hearing that. I am not glad that we have gained weight, but it's nice to know that I'm not alone. I know exactly what you mean about having a bigger appetite. It's ridiculous the amount of food I can eat these days. I hope these effects reverse once I get off of this. I can't afford to be as lethargic as I am on this so I am getting off. It's pretty hard to get off of, but between the weight gain and not being motivated to do anything. I can't do it anymore. Has anyone had any experience getting off of Trileptal? How did you start to get off of it? Any advice on the best way to stop taking it?

After I posted that I started wondering if there was more to it than the lethargy and the appetite. I mean, those would do it but I wonder if there is also some metabolic change, like a slowing down of the metabolism due to biochemical influences of the drug? I'm having a ridiculous time getting weight off. I have only been seriously trying for about a month but I've only lost like 2 pounds and with the diet I'm on you're supposed to lose a couple pounds a week. I have cut way back on carbs which seem to be my downfall while still eating well (lots of protein) and exercising. It's kind of discouraging. It's easier to stay on a diet when you see results.

As for me, I'm staying on Trileptal for now because I have tried several others and there aren't many options left. It doesn't make me nearly as tired as the Depakote did. That wiped me out! I was sleeping nine to ten hours a night plus taking one or two hour naps during the day. I think it also exacerbated my depression. I was depressed in the spring which is usually more of a manic time for me. I just wish I could find a balance of meds that works and just go about my business like a normal person.
