is stimulant psychosis possible on coffee ??

Posted by linkadge on October 2, 2004, at 8:22:58

I am under the impression that it is not possible due to the fact that it actually ameleorates some schitsophrenics symptoms and doesn't seem to exasperate positive symptoms. But it is a stimulant ???

Any ideas ?

Yes it is possible. I've seen it discussed a number of times. I think one has to be on a high dosage in order for it to kick in though. It may also depend on the sensitivity of the individual.

How many milligrams per day are you taking approx?

yup. Maybe you have caffeine allergy. And as far as I can remember, you drink a lot of coffee. Its tricky, and maskes itself. Google a bit about caffeine allergy.

No I am not presently going psychotic on caffiene (as far as I can tell). It really helps with anhedonia. It does make me a little panicky, but thats another issue.

It's possible, but not really the psychosis that amphetamine might cause. It would be more of a very very very panicky, heart beating out of your chest, detached feeling from what I've read. If you go to www.erowid.org I believe there actually is a story of someone using caffeine pills and getting a sort of quasi-psychotic detached panic attack. Pot seems to be a much closer representation to psychosis than high doses of caffeine. Even 10 cups within a short period of time for me doesn't induce more than a strong euphoric panicky feeling. Certainly not comfortable. But by 30 cups I'd say you might be approaching levels that will give you seizures or something else before you even get a chance to get the typical stimulant psychosis.

in a word, linkadge {and i don't even want to read the other people's replies just so i don't bring back bad memories}: YES!

combined with cigarettes {many} for sure.

I had a freak-out at school {privately had one} over this and prayed for the bad symptoms to go away. my brain is very sensitive, and thank god I am seeing a new neurologist next month, so I can have better monitoring of my anticonvulsants.

I am against antipsychotics for longer term use, so if you are the type that doesn't do well on them then I suggest you be cautious about all stimulant use {caffeine, sugar, nicotine etc}
