Effexor Withdrawal

Posted by jkc918 on September 21, 2004, at 19:18:21

Hi everyone,
I am brand new to the board. I did a quick taper (on my own) down from 225mg to nothing over 4 days. Today is my first day without any Effexor and I feel like poo-poo. I am having what I think other people have described as "brain-zaps" that I also feel in my ears. I am also dizzy, nausous and woozy. I have never done any illegal drugs nor had to detox from alcohol. How long do these feelings last? Are they dangerous? At what point do you seek medical help? What can I do to function? Please help

It's hard to say how long it will last. That's fairly individualistic. Others on this board have quit cold turkey and gone through hell for a while - though without any permanent damage. You can try to stick it out but it will probably get worse before it gets better, or you can go back on it and decrease more gradually. If you add in another SSRI (Prozac is the best choice because of its long half-life), then you shouldn't have much trouble at all. Then it's easy to go off of the Prozac. Also, it's not that hard to decrease from 225 mg. to 37.5 mg. It's the last 37.5 mg that are the most difficult.

Good luck!

Below 37.5mg was the worse for me too. I've been off of Effexor for 2 weeks now. I went from 150mg to nothing in 4 weeks. I am still experiencing some dizziness and nausea but it is much more tolerable than it was 2 weeks ago. The side effects from the withdrawl were scarey enough to prevent me from ever seeking a perscription antidepressant ever again.
