Zyprexa - how long does it take to work??

Posted by pretty_paints on September 22, 2004, at 9:35:09

Hi guys,

Can any of you help me? I've just got out of hospital and am on the following meds for psychotic depression:

225mg Venlafaxine (Efexor)
15mg Mirtazapine (remeron)
15mg Olanzapine (zyprexa)

I've been on the two antidepressants a few months, but only went up to the 15mg dose of olanzapine on monday night. Does anyone have any experience with this drug? I was on 5, then 10 in hospital and now my doctor increased it to 15. But the thing that worries me is that I noticed a real difference to my thoughts when I went up to 10, the very next day! But this time, I havent noticed anything. I feel so low now, it feels like nothing is gonna work. My thoughts are very muddled. Do you think it might take longer to work?

I cant help being really annoyed, coz Risperdal, the one I was on before, definately made more of a difference to my thoughts. It was great. But the side effects were HELL so I had to change. Its such sod's law though isnt it, the side effects on olanzapine are fine but the damn stuff isnt working :(

Sorry to rant on

love a very miserable kate

You might want to try another antipsychotic. I found Zyprexa to make me very sluggish and do absolutely nothing for my psychoses and possibly made my depression worse. I'm on Geodon, and it is great for my psychoses and depression, but it makes me sleepy at only 20mgs a day. I also have something in the way of psychotic depression or simple schizophrenia. I think most doctors are of the opinion that if an antipsychotic is going to work it is going to work within the first 48 hrs. to one week. I found this true for Geodon.

--- It sounds to me like TOO much 'Zyprexa' efficacy in your system. If you're feeling well on the dosage, 10 mg., then you'd better to say on this dosage. It's absolutely NOT true the 'higher' dosage, the 15 mg. is more helpful. Rather, it's harming your moods.

In my recollection, at the beginning of the Zyprexa therapy(with other meds.), it was 2.5 mg. to start and went up to the 10 mg. when I noticed my depression got WORSE, more depressive moods. The 2.5 mg. was EXACTLY for me, but went up to the 5 mg. and stay on this dosage thereafter. It's been for awhile for me to get 'full' effectiveness, in my case, erasing/wiping out most of my bothersome symptoms associated with Bp II with ultra rapid cycler.
In my suggestion, try to stick with the dosage where you feel better and comfortable.
H.G.
