SSRI withdrawal: frequency and consistency

Posted by cache-monkey on September 15, 2004, at 23:25:10

Hey all,

I've seen a lot of discussion on this board of the withdrawal effects from SSRI (and Effexor) discontinuation. This is a concerns me, since it sounds really nasty.

I realize, though, that people are more likely to post when something negative or unexpected happens. So I'm guessing that there are probably quite a few people who taper smoothly off. Since they have nothing to "report" really, we might not hear from them. This isn't to take away at all from the legitimate drug-related withdrawal effects that some people have to go through. But I'm wondering if anyone has a sense of how common the withdrawal syndrome is.

Also, I'd like to figure out if there's any consistency in individual responses to tapering. That is, if you get withdrawal effects (or not) when tapering one SSRI (or Effexor), does this indicate anything about getting (or not getting) withdrawal effects from another?

Specifically, I was on Celexa then Lexapro for a few months a while back. I tapered the Lexapro reasonably slowly when I went off of it and don't remember any withdrawal symptoms. Does this mean that I'm any less likely to go through withdrawal if I try another SSRI/SSNRI? Or is it pretty much a crap shoot?

Any info you have would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
cache-monkey

Hi there,
I have tapered off paxil and effexor, effexor was worse and alot of other websites have confirmed this for me, I think its worse than alot of them. But I think it depends on how high a dose and for how long you took it too, I also think that alot of people need it to stay sain, I have and hope to keep trying to find other ways to cope.(councelling, AA, spirituality) But ya, very bad withdrawal like nausea, dizzy, angry, phycotic yelling, weakness, extremely sleepy, weight gain....and for three weeks for me, but it sure helped me get through a bad year.
