Luminal or Klonopin and antipsychotic properties?

Posted by mmcconathy on September 8, 2004, at 11:29:31

Do these two meds, Klonopin, and Luminal do they calm racing, or chaotic thoughts.

I researched that Luminal was used in Asylums back in the 1910's and 1920's, after it replaced Chloral Hydrate. Before the major AP's came out in the 1950's

If you know info about either one, please put in put.

Thanks

Matt

Hi: I don't know anything about Luminal, but from my own experience with Klonopin, it does not stop racing thoughts.
It calms me down, so the thoughts don't cause anxiety/panic feelings (that is my response to the thoughts are minimized).....but the thoughts keep on rolling along and keep me awake or interrupt my concentration. My racing thoughts are the incessant worrying/pondering ones of GAD, I do not have Bipolar Dis. I've recently added Celexa to help control the continual "thinking" and it now seems to be helping quite a bit.
Are you Bipolar or GAD?
Take care,
Jas

Dissociative

I dont know what they use to treat dissociation yet, but it does relate to a panic attack.

Sometimes during an episode i feel like im losing my mind with my thoughts, they jumble together and become complete chaos.

I dont really want to go on an Acutal anti-psychotic, but if i have to i will.

Thanks for your input

Hi again:
If you're dissociative, then Klonopin may well work. I had a lot of de-realization/dissociation with my version of GAD. It can be an anxiety reaction, rather than a psychotic one. I, too could not make my mind focus during these "attacks" and I can't retrieve words etc. It's pretty much an adrenalin response. The Klonopin has worked wonders for that. I rarely get those any more, and it's usually as a result of extra stress.......when I'm s'posed to take more Klon.!
As, I said before tho' - no effect on the racing thoughts.
I can understand your reluctance to try anti-psychotics - that would scare me too. They can be awesome for ppl tho'. Klonopin is an easy drug to try for a short term, in terms of side effects and withdrawal ( as long as stopping is done carefully under Dr. supervision).
Take care, I hope you find the answer.

Racing thoughts? APs can help » mmcconathy

Atypical antipsychotics can very effectively control racing thoughts. If you are in Europe, try amisulpiride or sulpiride at lower doses. However these unique molecules are not available in US, but you can try either zyprexa or seroquel. Benzos are good, but they seldom ease constant worrying. SSRIs are often prescribed, but they take long time to have an effect and initially they can worsen the situation. APs don't do this and the effect is almost instant.
Stelazine 2mg will also be a nice choice.
Cheers

> Seroquel was strong for me personally. I felt really really knocked out from it. I was taking it for mania. I didn't like the way it made me feel. Dr said he wanted to play around with the dose but I wasn't up for it. It was tiring but not in a direct sedation effect. I felt like a zombie upon waking up from it. Yucky.
