Can Lamictal cause Bloating?

Posted by theo on September 10, 2004, at 16:05:51

Ever since I started Lamictal, I have a bloated belly. Yes, I've gained 2-3 pounds but my belly feels tight and looks like I've gained more than that. Is this a side effect?

It also caused me stomach problems and nausea at first, but that has gone away.

Geez I don't know but I'm noticing the same thing. The rest of me looks pretty normal but my belly is definetly bloated and that is the one part of me that tends to not do that. And here I was just thinking I was constipated or something. Go figure.

I didn't have that and would expect that it would dissipate soon, or maybe it's coming from another medication, or the mixing of it with something else. I was a little nauseous at first, but all of my side effects went away within about a week to a week and a half with every increase.

Yes, I had the same problem. My bloatedness unfortunately never went away, but did seem to fluctuate. I have been on it since last October.

I am very med sensitive, physiologically and mentally. My body just doesn't tolerate Lamictal very well. This may not be the case for you.

So do you still take it? If not, what are you taking for a mood stabilizer?

Yes, I am currently only on 25mg. I really have a love/hate thing with lamictal. I was and am also on neurontin and tegretol, and have been for a long time now. We had added the lamictal to see if we could get any AD effect rather than as a MS. Sometimes it seemed(s) to help, other times just feel crappy.

I maintained on 100mg for several months, but found I just didn't feel well physically(muscle pain, bloaty, dizzy...) so decided to reduce it. I just don't know if the 25mg is doing more harm than good. It is soo hard to tell, I also take zoloft 50mg. I believe I just end up being exhausted and have trouble thinking most of the time.

The thing that I really liked about the Lam was it seemed to have some good motivational aspects.
I really miss that and is why I don't want to get completely off of it. I don't know anymore...

How long have you been taking it for now?

About 16 weeks now. I got up to 150mg and actually started feeling like doing things but physically felt slowed and a little mentally also, so my doc dropped me back down to 100mg.

Now, I don't feel anything at 100mg to where I wonder if I should just throw in the towel or go back up to 150mg, or go down to 50mg? I know what you mean about the love/hate description.

I guess it just really depends on how well you are tolerating it. When I was at 150mg I became extremely agitated, 100mg seemed alright for a while anyways. You really haven't been on it that long you might as well hang on for a little longer and see how you adjust? Best of luck to you Theo!
