pregnant/breastfeeding on abilify and prozac

Posted by black lacquer on September 9, 2004, at 18:30:54

I am currently taking abilify and prozac and am concidering becoming pregnant. My dr. does not advise going off my meds. while being pregnant but I am skeptical of this advise. I visited a naturopathic dr. who suggests I taper off of my meds and try something called neuroreplete. (It is a supplement made of amino acids...see neuroreplete.com) Does anyone have any experience or advise relating to either pregnancy/breastfeeding on meds, or anything about "neuroreplete?"

Each case should be decided on its own merits. I think that the information part is the more important piece of informed consent. You might get some background from these two sources:

I really doubt that an amino acid supplement will be sufficient treatment to protect the fetus from the adverse effects of your own depression. If you want to talk about supplements more fully, please head over to the Alternative board.

Neuroreplete uses urine testing. That is completely useless, except to make them money. If it was a useful test, your medical doctor would use it. Urinary levels of e.g. 5-hydroxyindole-acetic acid (5-HIAA, the breakdown product from serotonin) do not tell you a thing about even so much as total brain serotonin metabolism, but absolutely cannot tell you anything about regional brain serotonin metabolism. Roughly 2/3 of all the serotonin in your body is in your gut, regulating the rhythmic passage of food from one end to the other. You can't distinguish the source of what is found in urine.

Also, these guys claim 100% treatment efficacy. Do you think that would be a secret? I'll tell you what. These guys list the ingredients of their products, so you could save money and buy them at walmart (except for the l-DOPA). Maybe the 100% success comes from their advocacy of SSRIs along with the nutrients. At the bottom of the "treatment protocols" page, there's this quote: "Celexa 20 mg to 40 mg per day or Lexapro 10 mg to 20 mg per day can safely be added to patients needing level 4 or 5 dosing to control symptoms and to lower the overall daily dosing of amino acids needed."

How's that combination of Prozac and Abilify working for you?

That can work wonders for people with resistant depression. atypical + SSRI. Especially the Abilify is excellent for some.

I take Geodon for schizophrenia and it has done a stellar job for both paranoia, delusions, disorganzied thought, and my negative symptoms that being my terrible depression. Its in all in one pill for me without needing an SSRI.

Cheers
Tom

Thank You Lar and Tom for your replys.

Lar- That is very interesting what you discovered re: use of SSRIs in conjunction with the neuroreplete. I agree with you...that may have something to do with their high success rate. Also, thanks for pointing me in the right direction...I will post my question on the "alternative" board.

Tom- The abilify/prozac combo works great for me. When taking the two together, the abilify dose needs to be lowered because the prozac potentiates it.
