Calling Parnate users! Can the dose be taken staggered throughout day, or must it be taken at once in morning? Prescription says all in morning, Doc doesn't really have strong feelings about it -- please share experiences!!
Also, I know it's contraindicated, but has anyone combined Parnate with Wellbutrin to combat fatigue side effects (the afternoon MAOI lull).
Thanks --

> PNo, IMO Parnate should not be taken all at once because this increases the risk of a spontaneous hypertensive crisis. The only reason you would want to take it all in the morning that I can think of would be to minimize insomnia, but I think a person would be better off just utilizing some kind of sleep aid in that situation. The truth is that splitting the dosage into at least two parts (staggering it throughout the day would be even better) will help spread out any stimulant effects of the drug, allow more efficient MAO inhibition, and as mentioned, decrease the risk of spontaneous hypertensive crisis. I would advise not taking the drug too late in the day, though, as this may tend to exacerbate insomnia problems.
That's the theory, anyway. As I will be starting this drug tomorrow, I will have to see how my own experience compares.

> PAt week 7 I'm taking 40 mg Parnate for breakfast and 20 mg for lunch, with no problems so far regarding spontaneous combustion (or hypertension). My pdoc recommends not dosing very late in the day due to possible exacerbation of insomnia. In my own experience, the afternoon sedation went away within two or three weeks of starting Parnate, and a within few days after increasing the dosage. I don't know anything about Wellbutrin, but I'm avoiding any polypharmacy as much as possible to give Parnate its best chance. My one exception is Ambien/Stilnox for the insomnia. Good luck.

Thanks folks for input. Just logged back in. We decided to stagger, I'm now on Day 10 total, but only Day 1 at 40mg. We tirated very slowly. 2 in morning, 2 early afternoon. I hope it doesn't take much longer for antidepressant effect. Sleep is tough, and MAOI drowsiness still hasn't gone away. Sort of worsens the "leaden paralysis" this med is meant to cure! But I know it's early, and DOC says it may have to go up to 60 mg or more. Holding off on wellbutrin for now, but was told by doc that it's not unheard of -- preferred over maoi + stim. thx
