i'm curious if you tried exercise before going the medication route, and how well it worked for you, if at all.

i would really appreciate your responses.

Before I took medication, I exercised aerobically for an hour a day. It did not fully prevent the depression but may have delayed it or reduced its sevarity.

Hi. I definitely tried the exercise route. For the last two years or so I have gone to the gym every weekday morning for spin class. My depression would ebb and flow, but the last year or so it kept getting worse. In desperation I exercised more -- weekends, every day, even two spin classes a day. (spin is pretty intense). I finally broke down and got anti depressants. The combination of AD and exercise is pretty darn good. But I'd say I was exercising hard 4-5 hours a week with only minimal results so by itself it may not work for everybody.

It does help with side effects with Lexapro, particularly sleepiness
best of luck to you.

I absolutly cannot excercise without taking meds. My heart rate could not be increased enough to get enough oxygen to my brain and limbs.

I have a normal HR of 55, the max i could increase my HR was 125 and would fatigue out in 15 minutes. On meds normal HR is 65; I can scream a womping 170 bpm for an easy hour.

Now, I am "rocking and rolling" boxing again, gym everyday. My body feels like a million bucks now, but my mind still feels bla bla. With meds I am able to work out anaerobicly. I have not been able to do that in 23 years. The fact I'm able to train anaerobicly has now set my sights on climbing Denali in the spring.

Tuesday I start therapy with a private therapist (non group yet, I'm socially shy as it is, let alone share this with people). I'm hoping she will be able to help me sort somethings out. I wonder if I will ever understand the impact of this illness. It's like I was in a 20 year time warp.

cheers M8's

I always was active and got a fair amount of exercise. Walking a couple of miles a day, going to the gym frequently, hiking. It didn't stop me from sliding down into depression. Nor has it helped me out of it. But I know it is helpful for mood control for many people. I do find it helpful for dispelling anxious energy.

You're welcome. I hope working out proves to be helpful for you. At worst, even if you don't happen to notice a significant antidepressant effect, it's nice to have your bod look good. :)
