I am slowly starting up Neurontin (will be tapering off Xanax XR 2mg daily after about a week on the NEurontin if it seems to be working)...I am excited about this drug because I have tried every single SSRI with no luck at all, but I know this drug affects the GABA instead of Seratonin.....Anybody have any luck with this drug? People have said it's good to have "at your disposal" as if it were a benzo and acts quickly...but my doc said its like an SSRI in that it takes a while to get into the system. So basically I dont know anything about this...whats the scoop? Thanks...

I really like Neurontin. IF you need it I find it works instantly. I can take it when I feel really anxious and it calms me right down. I wish i could be on it but I'm trying to lose weight I find It hard with Neurontin. I always have it on hand.

I am a possible candidate for some variety of BP II, mostly depressive and anxious (socially). I am starting a trial of lamictal (with my Celexa), but I'm feeling flaky and very flat (I guess that's what you want from a mood stabilizer).
My pdoc thinks neurontin is a crock of shit, but I might keep pushing him. Let us know how things go

I am no expert here- never went to medical school, but I have been using neurontin for a long time an dI must tell you that it does not work like an ssri. Once you reach your proper dosage you are calmed down and feeling pretty good within an hour.
Welll, maybe your doc meant that it takes time to find the right dose...
This drug has gotten so much negative press that a lot of ppl think it is a crock, but there are plenty of people who get REAL relief from it. I find that it takes some playing around with, but I read what others write and I see that that situation is not universal.
So I guess I would say it is more like a benzo in a lot of ways (I say taht because I personally develop a tolerance to it, have to take a break for few days or slowly start taking one pill less per day until I am nearly back at zero.....little games)
I really hope you have a good experience with it. Remember, it has a short half-life,(which to me is a bit of a drawback) so don't flip out i it isn't working 7 hours after you took it :-)
Good luck,
Diane
