dr.bob, chemist and all:
i had been diagnosed bipolar with psychosis in 2000 and have suffered moderately since then.
i am dissatisfied with current treatment options for bipolars and schizophrenics with psychosis. i have tried a number of antipsychotics, new and old, and while effective have lived in there wake of side effects for 4 years ... i am especially unhappy with insomnia and the weight gain.
CAN ANYONE HELP me find information on the future of psychosis/schizophrenia treatment? i enjoy to keep abreast of the antipsychotic "pipeline", but have found little information beyond current treatments. WHERE ARE WE GOING?
thank you,
john

hello there, chemist here...i am honored to be co-billed with dr. bob and all, yet am hardly in a position to answer your query...i am not aware of any developments other than those that are made known to the public by way of announcements from various pharmas/academics in the literature...perhaps others can provide a brighter picture....i wish you well, chemist

We, the parents of our 16 yr old boy who has been on Zyprexa for 1 year, having not had a tolerance for Abilify are frustrated too. I would like to hear a bit more about Seroquel and Risperdal since we have not been exposed to these. The weight gain factor with Zyprexa is tough to deal with, but the medicine works. Abilify can have many side effects, while using it my son had headaches, insomnia, nausea with vomiting yuch! What are the alternatives though?

Hi:
I too have been on the Zyprexa regimen along with other meds. due to Bp II with ultra-rapid cycler.
In the beginning of Zyprexa, I had NO weight gain to worry about. One reason was I was just 2.5 mg. and then 5 mg. for the past three years or so.One thing about which I noticed through my med. regimen, it seems there are NO good 'anti-psycho. meds.' in terms of 'weight issue.' In my case, 'two' A.D.s, Wellbutrin SR/Generic form and Nefadozone/Serzone seems giving a good 'brake' to NOT gain substantial pounds. However, for the last a half year, without any clues, I started to gain a weight, not bad but still not happy about this. In my search on alternative A.P. seems quite slim/dim because most of 'potent. A.P., such as Zyprexa and Risperdal has WEIGHT problem. Just, Abilify and Geodon has 'weight neutral/no weight.' However, those two APs has other 'notorious' problems, insomnaia and stimulating/acitivating problem, except Geodon that is a sort miler in that respect, but still annoying.
Somewhere here in Internet, I read that Eli Lilly that produces Zyprexa working VERY hard on this issue/weight problem. Then, in near future, ... there is the 'New' form of the Zyprexa which has 'magic' on weight problem.

the following link may help slightly as a beginning to your quest...there are a lot of options and even more information out there...
http://psychmeds.healingwell.com/custom4.html
i have been on risperdal for a short time, seroquel for a couple of years and am now trying geodon. each had troublesome side effects that some times go away (like nausea), that must be lived with (like weight gain), or that can be treated (like insomnia).
hope this helps a little.
