Lamictal and Memory Loss

Posted by yellowhat on August 16, 2004, at 13:26:31

I've been on 10mg Zyprexa and 200mg (twice daily) Lamictal for one year. My doctor recently took me off the Zyprexa at my request, but I'm still on the Lamictal. I recently heard that Lamictal causes severe short-term memory loss. The reason I got off of the Zyprexa was to try and regain the intelligence I'd obviously lost while on Zyprexa. I don't want to be stuck on yet another medication that effects my intelligence. Feedback?

I find that when my dosage of Lamictal exceeds 200mg, it significantly impairs my short term memory and blunts my cognitive capacity. I purposely lowered myself from 300mg to 150mg three weeks ago in an effort to minimize these effects. I don't seem to have lost the small antidepressant effect I glean from Lamictal, but I believe this is because the addition of memantine, a glutamate NMDA receptor antagonist, has helped offet the loss of glutamate release inhibition resulting from the reduction of Lamictal dosage.

Lamictal might have been more of a culprit than the Zyprexa. Very few people ever complain of cognitive impairment from Zyprexa.

Zyprexa and/or Lamictal exclusively

Now I'm worried that I got off the wrong medication. I'm pretty opposed to medication in general at this point, so any medication is the wrong medication. Anyone out there just taking Zyprexa or just taking Lamictal? I'd like to hear about any cognitive side effects you may have suffered on any one of these medications alone, that way I can sort out what's doing what to me. I really need to know: I'm starting grad school in a week.

my 2 cents....
I hate (using the word hate here) zyprexa. I took it years ago and will never forget how it messed me up. I barley remember that time. I was taking other meds with it, but i feel that was the major issue for me. I take lamictal now and only noticed some issues as i was beginning. I take 50mg now and will up it to 100mg in 2 wks. That is the dosage my pdoc recommends me stopping at.

This conversation has me concerned.

I have been taking lamictal for almost 3 years. lamictal has been my "staple" med. As in how they say bread is a staple for dinner.

many times i have been only on lamictal. it appears to be keeping me from bottoming out. i'm not sure about this, because it's very possible everytime I tried to get off it i was just going through a depression cycle.

my memory used to be dangerous (as in good dangerous to others). i would never forget anything.

my short term memory has suffered . my p-doc said memory loss was a symptom of depression, lack of sleep and anxiety to name a few.

my memory increased now that i'm getting sleep, but it's not like it used to be.

now you have me wondering if this lamictal is killing my short term memory.

i'm going to try and get off of it again and see what happens.

good observation bro!
