St. John's Wart While Weaning Off Effexor XR?

Posted by laurie_lu on August 10, 2004, at 8:22:05

I know docs prescribe Prozac to help with the withdrawl symptoms from weaning off Effexor XR. Can SJW be used to help with the withdrawl symptoms when I begin weaning off of my Effexor XR? Or is that not safe since you're not suppose to take other antidepressants or herbal medications while on perscription antidepressants?

I don't think that SJW would help for 2 reasons. First, it takes a long time to build up in your blood. And second, its not as strong as Prozac.

Also, what you said is true that it may not be safe.

St. Johns Wort functions in the same way that the SSRI's do in that it inhibits the re-uptake of serotonin. Add the fact that it also inhibits GABA,NE,DA,Glutamate and who knows what else I don't see why you couldn't at least give it a shot.

Make sure you get a high hyperforin extract like perika or Solaray.

Prozac is the tried and true method though so if you have access to it you would be best to use that.

Good luck.

I'd say don't try it, because the St. Johns wort will stop the Efexor from working. So say, if you are on 225mg and you start taking it as you cut down to 150mg, then from your body's point of view, you will suddenly be on ZERO Efexor, because the St. Johns wort will cancel it out. Get me?

That's just my understanding of it though, I'm not a doctor. :)

How does SJW cancel out Effexor? I was thinking that the SJW would replenish the missing Effexor so the withdrawl symptoms wouldn't be so bad and make them more tolerable.

Sorry to interrupt, but I'd like to redirect this thread to Psycho-Babble Alternative. Here's a link:
