An article in the Wall Street Journal, August 10, 2004, "Drug Cocktails Hit Psychiatry," contains an interesting quote:
"Dr. Keitner, who directs the inpatient mood-disorder clinic at Rhode Island Hospital, also worried that patients are getting the false hope the some magic combination of drugs will cure them . . . It may be better, Dr. Keitner says, to teach pateients how to manage their conditions and emphasize continuing therapy."
I'm wondering whether anyone here has successfully switched away from a multi-drug regimen and found it was better for them.

I hate when people ask, "are you managing ????"
I don't want to just "manage" my life. I want a life that I can enjoy. If all I am doing is just scraping by, then there's not much point to living. It seems to be a strong divide in thinking. One group says we just want you functioning, and the other group says we want you feeling *great*.

The attitude I've encountered in the NHS seems to be that if your "managing" i.e not sucidel then your doing okay and don't realy need treatment.
On the other hand perhapse its unreasonable of me to want to do more than this?

For me this is a resipe for relapse. If you can get to a point where you feel good enough to fully embrace both the pleasures and the responsibilities of life then you are likely to stay well for longer.
Just getting by is what most depressed people had been doing for the years leading up to their episode.
