IBS could effexor help?

Posted by carriejane on August 7, 2004, at 3:55:59

I was wondering if effexor will help with ibs as well as depression and anxiety. Ive tried all different pills for this, and everytime ive been on anti ds my doc says it might help but it never did. Has anyone had ibs and cured it through anti ds?

I've had intermittent stomach pains that my dr. thought could be IBS, and starting up effexor seems to have made it go away -- could be temporary, though, as it is just my first week.

Hi Carriejane,

Do you have constipation, diarrhoea or a combination? Effexor does nothing for me, but Nortriptyline does.

Cheers,
Panda.

Treating both is hard, fiber is about the only thing that covers both. :) The SSRI's(except Paxil) & Effexor tend to be neutral or cause diarrhoea, the older TCA's are constipating.
I naturally tend towards diarrhoea with anxiety exasperating it & causing pain. Effexor didn't change it much, I added Remeron & that helped a bit, I've changed to Nortriptyline, and old TCA, and it's be great. What other meds have you tried?

Cheers,
Panda.

Over the years, I have seen that the TCAs were the antidepressants most frequently chosen for IBS. Among other properties, perhaps the anticholinergic effects of these drugs help to reduce GI motility. I would think imipramine would be the best in this regard. Low dosages are used.

Here's a nice little piece I found:

ive tried 3 in anti depressant range mirtazapine prosac and citalapram. Also lots of different ones that are used to treat ibs, like peppermint oil capsules and anti spasmodics and one or 2 others that i forget now. I know its stress related, and im hoping that when/if my depression lifts as long as the anxiety goes with it that maybe the ibs will clear up! You think thats wishful thinking? lol

Scott,

That last bit in your link was exactly right about the effectiveness of AD's for 'pain-predominant IBS.' I found that 20 mg nortriptyline significantly reduced the level and frequency of GI tract pain.

A gastroenterologist told me that the two best medications for IBS were amitriptyline and nortriptyline.
