Bipolar Anxiety

Posted by griswald on July 20, 2004, at 18:50:26

Do any fellow bipolars suffer from extreme anxiety? Any suggestions on treatment would be appreciated. The SSRI's cause immediate rapid cycling with me and I am open to benzos, but the anxiety is generalized and I really don't want to be taking them around the clock.

Hi:
Anxiety is a kind 'Bi-Product' as having/being Bp, then I guess, we all Bps need to accept it whether you like it or not.
As to the right med. for 'Anxiety' for Bp,.... in my case, I take 'Zyprexa' 5 mg. and Nefadozone(a generic form of Serzone). The former is multi-purpose properties which offers a great relief on 'Rapid Cycler,' 'depressive side of Bp,' 'Anxiety,' and 'sleep VERY well.' The latter is truly an Anti-dep., but works well for 'Anxiety' as well.
Concerning SSRIs, I too agree with you. Most of SSRIs produce, at least brings up 'manic,' or worse of all, makes 'Rapid Cycler' getting worse.

Hi there. I'm not bipolar (at least from my understanding I'm not) but I've found Trazodone (which is typically used as a sleep aid) to be effective as a mild anti-anxiety. I also agree with you 100 percent on the benzo issue, I have generalized anxiety that waxes and wains according to stress in life, and refuse benzos because I'd just be taking them all the time and get myself into more hot water.
another option is Lamitcal according to my PDOC for anxiety and agitation, though there is that dum rash to worry about.

Thanks for your input. Zyprexa has been good for me becuase it causes insomnia, helps with anxuiety and is a mood stabilizer. Unfortunately it leaves me very hung over. I hear exercise is pretty good.
