Help Anxiety! Climbing the walls! is there hope?

Posted by TheOutsider on July 4, 2004, at 10:13:47

I just don't understand why I'm so anxious.
It just came out the blue, last winter.

I've never had this problem before, although I have suffered from social anxiety for a long time.

The only med I've tried is Remeron, which really helped but made me into a sleep zombie (I over sleep as it is).

I'm not anxious about anything, I just feel anxious, its making me very depressed.
If any one can think of any reason why I've just developed this problem I'd be interested to hear.
Also like to hear med suggestions, I think I'll try an SSRI first(not paxil). Which SSRI works best.
Unfortunatly Benzos are out, because I live in the UK!

Hi, a good SSRI for anxiety is Lexapro. Unfortunatelly, it can make you more anxious during the first 2-3 weeks. Moreover, it can take from 6-9 weeks before you feel the full benefit of the medication. Can you get some Xanax (alprazolam) for relief while the Lexapro "kicks in"?

uk here also... best bet to get some valium is to go to the doc on call and say u feel anxious etc they will give u a couple of valium then go to your docs and say doc on call told u to come to get something for your anxiety i.e valium.. say it was the only thing that has helped with your anxiety... also stick with the remeron (mirtazipan) i am on it and it keeps my anxiety 50% than what it used to be, i takes 2mg valium when i start to become anxious..doctor wont give us nothing else except valium, my doc said they dont prescribe the likes of xanax klon unless we been hospilized. r u a woman? if so get your hormones checked...

If you have OCD, I would try Tramadol it's a analgesic affects the opiate system, has really helped me. Do a search for Dr. Nathan Shapira and his work with Tramadol.,

"I just don't understand why I'm so anxious.
It just came out the blue, last winter.

you're not alone, I know this probabloy won't mean much now, but I felt like you, I didn't think there was any hope. Anxiety can come out of the blue, and it is not a reflection on your character or the like. I had horrific anxiety, and now I'm getting well.

A number of years ago I would have been wise to shy away from someone asking if there was hope for anxiety, but some wonderful new drugs have come out.

For OCD, try Tramadol, search Dr. Shapira.. Also many people are helped by combining an a-typical with an SSRI. Benzos are perscribed with hesitancy, and perhaps rightly so, although they reduce anxiety, they can affect memory, and cognition. I tried to come off them too quickly once and almost killed myself. I'm now slowly tapering off them, so caution there. But the good news is, that a new drug, pregabalin, which is related to neurontin, but supposedly is stronger, with less side effects, is supposed to be coming out in europe soon, under the name lyrica. I talked with a researcher and he said he had seen it do wonders for people with social phobia. Remeron sedates me, and I take it for sleep, in my experience I wouldn't recommend it as frontline treatment, if you want to be active. It's said by some to be a "chamelion drug" meaning, as you increase the dose, it starts to affect different chemicals. Whatever the case, my psychiatrist whom I respect says that in his experience raising the dose only causes more sedation.

Then there's Effexor, I found it to be helpful at 150mg, and cause anxiety at 300mg. Everyone responds differently, but hang in there, this is just a start, there are many options, and you don't need to feel hopeless,

15mg Remeron
4mg Clonazepam
2.5mg Zyprexa
all at bed time

150mg effexor - morning,
50mg Tramadol twice a day morning and one PM
Also take Dextromethorphan with the tramadol to prevent opioid tolerance. All the best:)

Ben

Thank you all for your help! Especially Temoigneur

Temoigneur, what you said about Pregablin being good for SA is fascinating!
Who told you it was good?

Hi there, I am also in the uk and use xanax when needed, unfortunately most english docs are somewhat "benzophobic" as our american friends rightly call them.
Celexa/ citalopram/ cipramil is the ssri they will happily prescribe and in my view it is one of the most effective for anxiety and less likely to send you further up the wall.
However if you get it insist on the liquid variety and start at one drop a day and work upto the regulation eight at your own pace ( it took me 3 months!)
You might want to look up the following as alternatives:
tryptozen, relora, pikamilon, phenibut and niacinamide ( not niacin!!)
For me xanax is by far the best but I had to get an american psych to prescribe it first , now I get it over here by private prescription with a very ok doctor.
Iam not addicted and use half the dose I used to, haven't had one now for a month!
In my view anxiety can come out of very little sometimes, it just means sadly that you have a very vulnerable nervous system.
Some form of relaxation may help, but for me it needed the xanax to get me into a state where I could use it, or cbt etc.

Good luck

Glenn
